Eagles will compete in the Simmons Invitational

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team is just two meets into the 2014-15 season, but it has already showcased its talent and improvement from just a season ago.  The Eagles will continue their preparation for the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships by heading a few miles down Washtenaw to compete in the Simmons Invitational Saturday, Jan. 17, in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Following a record-breaking 5000m performance by Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) and Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) at the EMU Holiday Meet, Dec. 5, 2014, the Eagles rang in the new year with a victory at the EMU Quadrangular, Jan. 9.  The Eagles saw seven victories, including two from Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) on the track and three wins on the field from Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) in the pole vault, Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) in the high jump, and Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Chartiers Valley) in the triple jump.

Saturday also marked the dedication of the newly unveiled top-10 boards inside Bowen Field House.  Head Coach Sue Parks, along with men's track and field Head Coach John Goodridge, held a special ceremony to honor Doug Tompkins, a dedicated alumnus who has maintained EMU's all-time lists for decades.  Tompkins was given a plaque commending his work for the Eagles, and the top-10 boards were dedicated in his honor at the beginning of the EMU Quadrangular.

The Simmons Invitational is held annually at the University of Michigan in honor of Ken "Red" Simmons, who is considered the founding father of Michigan's women's track and field program.  Included in the day's athletic events will also be the induction of five former Michigan student-athletes to the U-M Women's Track and Field Hall of Fame.

The meet will be held inside U-M's Indoor Track Building, and will kick off with the field events at 10:30 a.m., while the track events will begin at 2:30 p.m.  The women's events will be contested first, followed by the men.
