ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team wrapped up its third competition of the 2014-15 slate at the Simmons Invitational, Jan. 17. The meet was not scored, but numerous Eagles placed in the upper standings of their respective events.
Eastern came away with one win on Saturday's meet, but had an additional eight top-five finishes. Newcomer Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) had the lone victory, dominating in the triple jump with a mark of 12.41 meters/40 feet 8.75-inches. Dreimane's leap earned her the victory by over four feet, and stands as the sixth-farthest jump in EMU history. The Green and White also saw a pair of runner-up finishes split between the track and field. In the 60m dash, Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams) ran a 7.64 in the championship heat to finish second after running the prelims in 7.71 seconds. Pollatz went on to grab the highest finish for the Eagles in the long jump at 5.37 meters/17 feet 7.50-inches for third, and the pair of Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Chartiers Valley) and Uy both recorded personal bests at 5.25 meters/17 feet 2.75-inches and 5.13 meters/16 feet 10-inches, respectively.
Three more events were contested on the field, with the highest finish coming from Coyne in the high jump. The Pennsylvania native jumped just two centimeters off her personal best, clearing 1.63 meters/5 feet 4.25-inches for fourth. In the throws, Darcie Marion (Adrian, Mich.-Madison) competed in both the shot put and the weight throw. Marion had a career best in the shot put, throwing 12.06 meters/39 feet 7-inches and also finished in the top-20 in the weight throw with a 13.67-meter/44-foot 10.25-inch launch. Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) led the Green and White in the weight throw, going 15.29 meters/50 feet 2-inches for 11th, while Helga Volgyi (Szombathely, Hungary-Savaria Technical College) threw 14.29 meters/46 feet 10.75-inches in her collegiate debut.
Back on the track, the Eagles had 10 individual top-10 finishes. Agata Klimovich (Minsk, Belarus-Minsk School of Olympic Reserve) claimed third in the 400m in 58.14 seconds, followed closely by Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) in 58.27 seconds for fourth. The team also had a strong showing in the 200m, with McKinney taking fifth in 25.33 seconds while Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich.-Waverly) posted a time of 25.72 seconds for eighth.
Uy continued to shine in the 60m hurdles, as the sophomore has recorded a career best in each of her three showings this season. The Kettering, Ohio native qualified for the final heat with a time of 9.00 seconds and went on to finish sixth. In the prelims, Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif.-Carson) and Maya Carter (Racine, Wis.-Case) both finished in 9.16 seconds, a career best for each of them, to tie for 10th.
The team also saw success in the distance events, with Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp.-Chippewa Valley) finishing the mile run in 4:58.71 for seventh and Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline) shaving nearly 20 seconds off her personal record in the 3000m run for an eighth-place finish. Frauhammer crossed the line in 10:36.59, while Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich.-Seaholm) took 10th in 10:41.57.
Two more individual events took place on the track; Rebecca Quaintance (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) was the lone competitor in the 800m run with a 2:24.25 mark, and the pair of Hurd and Carter competed in the 600m run. Hurd led the way in 1:41.04, while Carter clocked in at 1:43.24.

"I felt that it was a solid showing for the team today," explained Head Coach Sue Parks. "We ran some different events in some cases and also held out some runners for training purposes, but overall it was a good day. We had some nice highlights by two freshmen, including a great debut by Dace and a strong first-ever mile for Natalie. It was great to see some new faces working hard to contribute to the team. We are excited to head into this next weekend where we will face tough competition in a scored meet."
Eastern will head to South Bend, Ind. next weekend to take part in the Notre Dame Invitational. The meet will take place Saturday, Jan. 24, starting with the field events at 10 a.m. while the running events will kick off at noon.
