The Eagles Sweep Oakland to Close Out the Non-Conference Schedule

9/30/2014 9:24:00 PM | Volleyball

Perinar led the offense with 17 kills, while Corynne Smith notched 20 digs

ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team won its second straight match in sweeping fashion Tuesday, Sept. 30, as the Eagles (10-6, 1-1 MAC) took down the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies in three-straight (25-13, 25-22, 25-22).

Stacey Perinar led the offensive charge for EMU, tallying 17 kills along with a .324 hitting percentage, while Megan Crawshaw contributed six kills and Kelsey Jones posted five. Jill Briner continued her setting duties at a high mark, notching 28, while also totaling five kills.

On the other side of the net, the Eagles put together one of their best defensive performances of the season. As a team, EMU notched a season-high 12 total blocks, including one solo and six assists from Crawhsaw, while Perinar and Katie Krasowski each stuffed the opposition on five occasions. Corynne Smith put together another amazing performance, averaging 6.67 digs per set after corralling 20 total.

Perinar began the match strong, posting seven kills on 11 attempts in the opening 25-13 frame. In that set, the Eagles hit .393 as a team. Melva Smith notched three kills, while Crawshaw added a pair. EMU held Oakland to just an .028 attack percentage after blocking OU three times on its way to an one-set lead.

Eastern Michigan spread out the love offensively in the second set, seeing five Eagles come up with two-or-more kills. Briner was able to setup 10 assists in the set, but it was Corynne Smith's defensive play that was the difference. The Norwalk, Ohio native recorded 12 of her 20 digs in the 25-22 set victory. The Green and White held Oakland to a .182 attack percentage, while notching four blocks.

It was Perinar again in the third and final set of the match who brought out the hammer. The junior outside hitter recorded seven more kills, while Briner added 10 more assists. Eastern stuffed the Grizzlies five times in the set, including Crawshaw's solo block, along with four assists from the Mattawan, Mich. native. Eastern came away from the set, hitting .182 on the way to another 25-22 set win, sealing up the Green and White's final non-conference match of the 2014 season.

The Eagles continue Mid-American Conference play Friday, Oct. 3, when they travel to Muncie, Ind. to square off with the Ball State University Cardinals. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at John E. Worthen Arena.
