Eagles Fall Short in Battle of the Birds with Ball State

Despite going to five sets, EMU dropped the match to the Cardinals

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – After sweeping two matches in a row, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was taken down by Ball State University in a Mid-American Conference West Division matchup Friday, Oct. 3. The Eagles (10-7, 1-2 MAC) dropped the opening set, 16-25, before taking the next two, 25-16, 25-16, before the Cardinals (8-8, 2-1 MAC) won sets four and five, 25-27 and 13-15.
 
Jill Briner was the offensive catalyst for the Green and White. The setter put up a triple double, posting 10 kills with a .350 attack percentage, along with 30 assists and 15 digs. Megan Crawshaw added 10 kills, while, Katie Krasowski and Stacey Perinar each posted eight. In addition to her eight kills, Perinar served up three aces.
 
On the defensive side of the net, the Green and White totaled 10 blocks, while Natalie Folk led the squad with 18 digs and Corynne Smith added 15. Dori Harrison recorded a career-high 10 digs, while Perinar posted 12. Krasowski totaled four block assists, while Crawshaw continued her pursuit of the EMU all-time block assist record with two more.
 
The Eagles' offense struggled in set one, along with the defense. EMU hit just .121, while the Cardinals posted a .333 average. At the net, Eastern did not record a block, although the Green and White had three post two kills in the 16-25 setback.
 
EMU continued to struggle offensively in set two, despite a 25-16 victory in the frame. Briner, Perinar and Melva Smith each recorded three kills, but as a team Eastern Michigan hit just .098. Folk recorded eight of her digs, while Harrison notched six, holding the Cardinals to an .043.At the net, the Eagles posted three blocks to keep BSU off the board.
 
Eastern came out swinging in set three to take a the lead after taking the frame,25-16. EMU hit .464, while Briner went a perfect 3-for-3 and Krasowski went 4-for-5. Defensively, the Eagles held Ball State to a .154 hitting percentage and went into the fourth frame with a 2-1 lead.
 
The Cardinals took Eastern to extra points in set four to even things up, 2-2, after a 27-25 setback for EMU. Crawshaw and Perinar led the Green and White with three kills each, but BSU used three block as a team and five kills from Kelly Hopkins to knot things up.
 
Eastern was unable to get things going offensively in the fifth and final set, falling 13-15. EMU hit a troublesome .000, while Ball State posted a .238 percentage. Crawshaw was able to muster three kills but EMU dropped the final set to fall to 1-2 in conference play.
 
The Eagles continue MAC play Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Toledo, Ohio for a West Division matchup with the University of Toledo. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. at Savage Arena.
