The Eagles had a good showing in day one

EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team continued the fall season Friday, Sept. 26, at the 2014 Wildcat Invitational held by Northwestern University at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. There were a pair of sessions, with the first beginning at 9 a.m. (CT) in Evanston, Ill.

Klara Supejova opened the morning session with a 6-3, 6-3, singles win over Oklahoma's Zita Engbroks, but Supejova's effort proved to be the only one that landed an EMU victory in the early goings. Andrea Marinovska dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to Northwestern's Brooke Rischbieth, while Daphne Friedrichs suffered a two-set setback, 6-1, 7-5, to DePaul's Patricia Langranjan in the Purple Flight. In the Black Flight, Maria Paula Ribero fell victim to Kentucky's Stepanhie in a three-setter, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Two of the Eagles' doubles teams were in action during the morning session, but both came away empty handed. In the White Flight, Ani Gogvadze and Ribero fell in an 8-2 decision, while Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna were on the back end of an 8-3 final in the Gray Flight. Supejova and Martinovska received a bye in round one of the White Flight.

Supejova moved on the round of 16 in the Purple Flight but dropped the match, 6-3, 6-3, to DePaul's Yuliya Shupenia. In the first round of the consolation Martinovska dropped a match to fellow Mid-American Conference opponent Meika Ashby, 6-3, 7-6, 6-2, from Western Michigan. Friedrichs, however was able to knock off a Bronco, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, as she took down Tracy Kuhle. Almoyna defeated Labina Petrovska from Western Michigan, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

"We had some good battles in singles today, with some good wins," stated Head Coach  Ryan Ray. " Our doubles play hopes to improve tomorrow.  We are progressing slowly on many things as we move through this Fall.  This is a strong tournament field, here, but I expect us to win a lot of the close matches as we prepare for next semester.  Tomorrow is another day to get better, and I think we are making steady progress in some areas."

The Eagles continue the Wildcat Invitational tomorrow, Sept. 27. Matches begin at 9 a.m. (CT) Saturday morning.
