Tennis Completes Day Two of the Wildcat Invitational

The Eagles won two matches in doubles and three singles matches
EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team continued the fall season Saturday, Sept. 27, completing the second day at the 2014 Wildcat Invitational held by Northwestern University at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
In the Purple Flight, Andrea Martinovska and Daphne Freidrichs both suffered straight set losses. Matinovska fell 6-3, 6-2 to Pittsburgh's Katherine Castro, while Freidriches dropped her match to Christiana Brigante of Okalahoma, 6-0, 6-4. Rounding out the Purple Singles Flight, Klara Supejova was defeated by another Sooner, Abbi Melrose, 6-4, 6-2. Supejova also lost a hard-fought match to Northwestern's Alex Chatt; after dropping the first set 6-2, the junior Eagle bounced back with a 6-2 set win of her own. However, Chatt claimed the match by taking the deciding tiebreaker, 7-5. Maria Paula Ribero had the strongest day for the EMU netters, picking up two victories in the Black Flight. The Bucaramanga, Colombia native won in straight sets over Hillary Hagar of Michigan State, 6-2, 6-0, while also claiming a two-set decision against Western Michigan's Ela Perivovic, 6-0, 6-1. Also competing in the Black Flight, Alejandra Barcelo split her two matches, winning in straight sets over Ann Sophie Hahn of Illinois-Chicago (6-3, 6-2), but dropping a 6-0, 6-4 contest to UIC's Bianca Zuzu. Ani Gogvadze completed the Eagles' single performances by falling twice, including a close three-set match to Stephanie Fox of Kentucky, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8).
In doubles action, the Eagles appeared in five matches. Supejova and Martinovska dropped an 8-4 decision to Florida International's Yana Koreleva and Carlotta Orlando in the quarterfinal round of the White Flight. In the consolation quarterfinal of the White Flight, Gogvadze and Ribero fell 8-5 at the hands of Pittsburgh's Lolade Ogungbesan and Katherine Castro. Finally, in the consolation round of the White Flight, Supejova and Martinovska dropped another 8-4 decision, while Gogvadze and Ribero took their final match of the day, 8-5, defeating Meika Ashby and Tracy Kuhle of Western Michigan. In the Gray Flight, the duo of Friedrichs and Barcelo appeared in two matches. First in the consolation quarterfinal, they fell to Aslina Chua and Hilary Hagar from Michigan State, 8-4, before knocking off WMU's Ella Perinovic and Labina Petrovska, 8-5.
Eastern completes the Wildcat Invitational Sunday, Sept. 28. Matches begin at 9 a.m. (CT).
