Wildcats Clip Eagles in Heartbreaking Five Set Loss

After trailing, 2-1, the Eagles took it to five sets but fell just short

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's volleyball team traveled across Washtenaw County Friday, Sept. 19, for the 2014 Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. In the Eagles (7-4) first match of the day, they dropped a heartbreaking five set decision to Kansas State University. Eastern took set one, 30-28, before the Wildcats (11-1) poached the next two, 25-11, 25-20. Eastern rallied in set four with a 25-16 decision before KSU managed a 19-17 victory in the final frame.
Sophomore Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) posted a career-best 11 kills, making just one error on 21 attempts, good for a .476 attack percentage. Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) paced the Eagles with 17 kills, while both Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) and Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City) notched 10 apiece. In addition, Briner posted 46 assists for the squad. As a squad, the Eagles posted a .210 attack percentage, totaling 65 kills in the match.
On the other side of the net, the Green and White posted a total of seven blocks, while Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led the squad with 23 digs and Perinar stuffed four of the KSU attack attempts along with her 10 digs. In addition, Briner, Natalie Folk (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Plainwell) each contributed nine digs in the match.
Eastern prevailed in the opening set, 30-28, despite needing extra points. As a squad, EMU was on fire offensively. The Eagles hit .386, led by Perinar who notched eight kills on 16 attempts with just one error. In addition, both Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) and Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) contributed four kills apiece, while Briner was solid setting up the Eagles, reeling in 16 assists in the set. On the other side of the net, Eastern held Kansas State to a .261 attack percentage, while Perinar and Smith each picked up five digs.
Eastern saw itself struggle in set two as it managed just eight kills on 30 attempts. In total, EMU hit at a .000 clip, while Kansas State came out swinging with a .414 attack percentage and 14 kills. The Eagles picked up three kills from Perinar, while Briner added a pair. Smith picked up five more digs in the 25-11 set loss.
Set three was better for the Eagles, but they were unable to keep the Wildcats hitting at bay in the 25-20. The Green and White never saw the lead in the third set, while KSU hit at a .310 clip, compared to Eastern's .158. Jones was a spark for the Eagles, helping Eastern keep a close margin versus the Wildcats. Jones posted a 4-of-6 performance at the net, while Perinar came away with three kills. Defensively, the Green and White had 15 digs, with four from Smith and three from Briner, Davis and Folk.
The Eagles came back strong in set four, evening up the match 2-2, with a 25-16 win. Murray was a force at the net for EMU. The sophomore went 4-of-6 offensively, while picking up a solo block for the Green and White. Briner showed her offensive prowess by picking up three kills along with her nine assists. Smith and Folk remained steady in the back row, recording six and four digs, respectively.

The Eagles continue the Michigan Invitational later on Friday evening. Eastern will square off with Youngtown State at 5 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. EMU has yet to lose in the series with the Penguins, going a perfect 4-0 all-time against YSU.
