Men's Golf Starts Strong at Golfweek Challenge

BURLINGTON, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team shot an opening round five-over-par 293 and is in fourth place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sunday, Sept. 14. The event is being played at the par 72, 7,229-yard Spirit Hollow Golf Club in Burlington, Iowa.
Sophomore Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) and senior Brett White (Caledonia, Mich.-East Kentwood) each shot an under-par round of 71 and are tied for sixth place individually. The duo are four strokes behind leader Stewart Jolly of LSU, who sits on top of the leaderboard with a 67.
Senior Michael Blair (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada-Nelson-Pfeiffer) is tied for 24th place with opening round 74. Junior Jared Multer (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview-Grand Rapids C.C.) is tied for 43rd at 77 and freshman Nicholas Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) is tied for 49th after a 79 on Sunday.
Louisiana State leads after the first round, shooting a 10-under-par 278 on Sunday. Host Iowa is in second place followed by SMU (287), Eastern Michigan (293) and San Jose State (294). Southeastern Louisiana and Texas State are tied for sixth at 295 Xavier is in eighth at 298. Austin Peay is ninth at 299 followed by Oregon State (301), UTEP (304) and Richmond (307).
The tournament features 12 teams from 12 different conferences, and receives national exposure through Golfweek Magazine and Golfweek.com. Florida State won the inaugural event in 2009 before the Hawkeyes claimed the title in 2010. Oklahoma secured last year's title, while Missouri held the top spot in 2012 and Arkansas in 2011.
The second round will be played on Monday morning and the final round will be played on Tuesday.
