JONES CREEK, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University men's golfer Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalger) completed the 2014 U.S. Amateur Championships at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Jones Creek, Ga. Wednesday, August 13.
First contested in 1895, the U.S. Amateur is the oldest golf championship in the country – one day older than the U.S. Open – and is for amateurs who have USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 2.4. Earlier this summer Kremer won the U.S. Amateur qualifying tournament at the Oakland Hills Country Club, shooting an impressive 69 on day two and a two round total of 141 (71-69) to punch his ticket to the 2014 U.S. Amateur Championships.
Kremer opened up the first round of competition carding a 75, just three strokes over par, before closing out round two with a score of 84 to total a two round score of 159 (+16) in his first amateur championships. The Toronto, Ontario native used three birdies in the first round to propel him to a total round score of 75, but was unable to keep pace in the second round shooting an 84 with just one birdie.
In his freshman season donning the Green and White Kremer participated in 28 rounds, averaging a 76.46 per round. Kremer shot a season-best 217 (76-71-70) at the USF Invitational (March 2-4), finishing just one over par. The Toronto, Ontario native finished in the top 20 on one occasion, grabbing a 16th-place finish at the Rutherford Intercollegiate (April 19-20).
