EUGENE, Ore. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field sophomore Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) finished up his first portion of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Junior World Championships with the championship heat of the 400m dash Thursday, July 24, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Brown wrapped up his individual international campaign representing Team USA in eighth place.
Brown had to complete three days of heats during his 400m slate. The 2014 Junior National champion won both his heats in the preliminary and semifinal rounds and earned the second overall seed in each. In the preliminary heat on Tuesday, July 22, Brown earned the top finish in the heat by the skin of his teeth, edging out Great Britain's Jack Crosby in 0.03 seconds with a time of 46.45 seconds. Despite the close finish, Brown remained calm about his first performance as he only needed one of the top-three spots in the heat to earn automatic qualification to the semifinals. "I wasn't expecting to win it; it wasn't my intention. It just turned out that way," he explained. Though his intention may not have been to dominate the heat as he did, Brown also came away with the second overall seed out of 47 athletes, behind only Nobuya Kato of Japan by a margin of 0.22 seconds.
The second day of competition saw the sophomore win with a more comfortable cushion in his semifinal heat. Brown ran the second sub-46-second mark of his career, winning by nearly a quarter of a second over Kenya's Alexander Lerionka Sampao in 45.97. He was one of just two athletes to break the 46-second barrier, the other being junior world leader Machel Cedenio of Trinidad and Tobago, who took the top seed in 45.90 seconds. Even though the performance was the second-best of his career, Brown saw room for improvement going into the finals. "I had decided before the race whether or not I was going to leave it all on the track in the final stretch and I decided just to go for it. I still didn't get out hard enough, and it's still just a work in progress," said Brown. In the heat, Brown trailed going into the final turn, but was able to muscle through the last 80 meters to produce the win. He expounded on his mindset during the final stretch of the race, saying, "I couldn't let myself try to risk a time qualifier, so I decided just to go for the win and get a good lane for [the finals]."
Unfortunately, Brown was unable to turn in a performance similar to the previous day in the championship heat. He came out strong to open the lap, but was soon overtaken by Cedenio in the Trinidadian's personal record-breaking 45.13-second victory. The sophomore finished in 47.30 seconds to wrap up a grueling three days of competition.
The 2014 World Junior Championships has not yet come to an end for Brown, who will also represent Team USA in the 4x400m relay, for which he is ready and excited to participate in the four-man event. The semifinal heats will take place Saturday, July 26 at 3:35 p.m. PDT, but Brown will be reserved for the finals on Sunday, July 27 at 5 p.m. PDT. Universal Sports Network will provide live coverage, and results will be available through the IAAF.
