AUSTIN, Texas (EMUEagles.com) — After closing out the 2013-14 season on Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team at the NCAA East Regional, May 29-31, redshirt-junior Harry Dixon (Nelson, New Zealand-Nayland College) has been named a member of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
After being named to the Academic All-District team in District Five, May 29, Dixon ran his final race of the 2014 season in Jacksonville, Fla., when he took on the field in the 5000m run. The Nelson, New Zealand native finished in 15:40.65.
Dixon boasts a nearly perfect grade point average of 3.99 in biology, which gives him the third-highest GPA on the nation's third team. The fifteen members of the third team hold an average GPA of 3.78, led by Trevor Halsted of the University of California, Davis and Steven Jordan of Drake University with flawless grade point averages. The entire list of Academic All-Americans, comprised of 45 athletes from 36 different NCAA Division I institutions, holds an average GPA of 3.85 and boasts 11 student-athletes with a 4.0-or-higher. This year, Luke Caldwell of the University of New Mexico was named the Academic All-America® of the Year with a GPA of 3.92 in physics.
The cross country and track standout is the only representative from the Mid-American Conference on any Academic All-American team. A senior in eligibility for the 2013 cross country season, the New Zealand native earned Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors following the Eagles' fourth consecutive MAC Championship on Nov. 2. Dixon was named to the All-MAC First Team after being the fifth harrier to cross the line at 25:10.81. He had a season-high runner-up finish at the EMU Classic, Oct. 25, in which he ran a 15:15.50. Dixon also compiled a top-50 finish at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 4, taking 43rd in 25:11.20 before ending his cross country career at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 15, with a 56th-place finish in 31:49.00.
The Eagles will have one more year to utilize Dixon in the 2014-15 track and field season, as he holds a redshirt-senior eligibility in both upcoming indoor and outdoor campaigns. This year, Dixon punched his ticket to the 2014 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with a personal-best mark of 14:29.90 in the 5000m at the SPIRE Invitational, Feb. 14. At the conference meet, in which the Eagles took third with 110 points, Dixon took seventh in the 5000m in 14:51.33. When his outdoor campaign kicked off at the Tennessee Relays, April 12, Dixon finished runner-up in the 5000m with a MAC qualifying mark of 14:32.84. The following week, he sliced 20 seconds off his mark to take seventh at the Jesse Owens Classic, notching a personal-best time of 14:12.91, which has earned him a spot in the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla.
