BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)—
Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team heads into the final weeks leading up to the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with promising marks from the Billy Hayes Invitational, May 3 at Indiana University.  The Eagles notched numerous personal records and MAC qualifying marks as well as a pair of marks that rank in the top-10 nationally.

After breaking a 15-year old record less than a month ago at the Tennessee Relays, Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) blew his previous distance out of the water with a staggering mark of 16.34 meters/53 feet 7.50-inches.  The redshirt-junior tacked nearly a foot onto his personal-best distance and handily won the title at the Billy Hayes Invitational by a margin of over two feet.  With his record-breaking performance, Scott took over national rankings, dethroning Arkansas' Anthony May, to whom Scott took second behind at last week's Drake Relays, April 23.  Scott now holds the nation's standard for the year by a comfortable margin of nearly seven inches.

Also performing exceptionally well on the national scene was Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University).  The Polish product won the 1500m invitational run in 3:41.80 to reclaim his reign over MAC standings, holding nearly a three-second edge over Akron's Clayton Murphy.  Kalinowski's time ranks eighth nationally and third in the NCAA East Region, additionally going down in EMU laurels as the fourth-fastest performance in program history.  In the open section of the 1500m run, Daryl Smith (Windsor, Ontario-Vincent Massey S.S.) claimed another victory for the Green and White after crossing the line in a personal-best 3:49.94. Teammate Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) competed in the event for the first time in his collegiate career and punched his ticket to the MAC Championships after finishing in 3:51.19 for third.

The Eagles came away with two more victories split between the track and field events.  Aaron Benton (Dryden, Mich.-Almont) continued his consistently strong outdoor season with a win in the high jump, clearing 2.08 meters/6 feet 9.75-inches.  Benton jumped just two centimeters shy of his personal record, as did James O'Shea (Toledo, Ohio-St. Johns Jesuit), who tied for sixth with a mark of 2.04 meters/6 feet 8.25-inches.

On the track, the 4x100m relay team of Wayne Blanchard (Toledo, Ohio-St. Francis de Sales), Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior), Chris Scott (Holt, Mich.-Holt), and Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) won in 40.43 seconds.  The tracksters went on to perform well individually on both the track and field.  Brown turned out a runner-up finish in the long jump in his second collegiate outdoor appearance, tying for second with a personal-best leap of 7.20 meters/23 feet 7.50-inches.  Scott notched a personal record and MAC qualifying mark in the preliminary heat of the 100m dash, as did fellow Eagle Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower), who finished in 10.61 and 10.62, respectively, to finish third and fourth.  Bolton paced Scott in the championship heat, crossing the line at 10.63 for third, while Scott took sixth in 10.84 seconds.

In the 400m hurdles, Elam finished in a personal-best 52.74 seconds for fourth ahead of Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior)'s 55.85-second finish.  Lindsey also competed in the 110m hurdles, taking third in the final heat with a personal-best time of 14.34 seconds.

To cap off the action in the sprints, Scott took sixth in the 200m dash at 21.69 and Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis.-Bradford) and Jason Ervin (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Farmington) went 3-4 in the 400m dash.  Waynes took the third spot in the lap around the track with a personal-best time of 48.42, while Ervin crossed the line at 48.61.

In the mid-distance 800m run, Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) shaved over two seconds off his personal record to take fourth in 1:52.02, easily qualifying for the conference meet.  The Eagles also had a representative in the 3000m run, as Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium) finished runner-up in 8:34.98.

There were a variety of team leaders in the throwing events, with the most success coming in the hammer throw.  Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville) took fourth with a throw of 57.52 meters/188 feet 8-inches to qualify for the MAC meet.  Not far behind Williams was a personal-best performance from Andrew Wentz (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon), who took ninth at 53.13 meters/174 feet 4-inches.  The Eagles went 6-7-8 in the shot put, led by Travis Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) at 15.95 meters/52 feet 4.00-inches.  Williams followed at 15.73 meters/51 feet 7.25-inches, and freshman Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio-River Valley) took eighth at 15.67 meters/51 feet 5.00-inches.  The discus throw was paced by Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky), who threw for a distance of 45.90 meters/150 feet 7-inches.  In the javelin throw, Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) led the Eagles with a sixth-place finish after throwing 54.55 meters/179 feet.

Wrapping up action on the field, Dylan Stites (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake) matched his personal best in the pole vault as the junior tied for ninth with a jump of 4.75 meters/15 feet 7.00-inches.  The meet concluded with the 4x400m relay, which saw a different lineup than usual consisting of Ijah, Bradley, Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community), and Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Northview).  The quartet took third in 3:16.41.

At the close of the meet, Head Coach John Goodridge had a positive outlook going into the MAC Championships.  "The coaching staff was very happy with our overall results.  We're certainly very excited for not only Donald and Grzegorz posting high-ranking national performances, but also for Donald breaking his own school record in the triple jump."

The Eagles will remain closer to home for the final regular season meet of the 2014 campaign, heading to MAC foe the University of Toledo for the Toledo Invitational Friday, May 9.
