YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team is off to a perfect 5-0 in Mid-American Conference matches this season. That is the best start in conference play since the Eagles went 8-0 to start the MAC season back in 2003, before falling to then-conference member, Marshall University. Eastern Michigan looks to continue its perfect play this weekend when it hosts two teams tied for second in the league. First, the Green and White will host the reigning MAC regular season and tournament champion, Miami University, on Friday, April 11. Next, Ball State University will come calling Saturday, April 12, for the final match of the season, and Senior Day for the team's four seniors. Both duals are slated for 1 p.m. at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex. With a sweep, the Eagles will lock up their first Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championship since the 1998 season.
The Eagles and RedHawks have squared off on 36 occasions in the two institutions histories. Miami has been dominant as MU holds a 30-6 edge over the Green and White. In fact, Eastern Michigan has not defeated the RedHawks since the 2004-05 season when the Eagles walked away with a 5-2 victory, April 2, 2005. Last season, Miami knocked off EMU, 5-2, in Oxford, Ohio. After winning the doubles point, Klara Supejova was the only bright spot for EMU, sweeping Nimisha Mohan in the No. 1 singles spot, 6-4, 6-4, to give Eastern its only singles victory of the day.
Eastern Michigan has outshined Ball State significantly in the all-time series between the Cardinals and Eagles. EMU holds a 27-6 edge, while holding a 16-match winning streak over the Muncie, Ind. based institution. Furthermore, Head Coach Ryan Ray has never lost to the Cardinals. In the 2012-13 season, his squad took down BSU, 5-2, April 6, in Muncie. The Eagles led off by winning two-of-three doubles matches before Eastern dropped just two of the singles contests, taking all but one in two sets. Following the match with Ball State on Saturday, there will be a short presentation which will honor EMU's four seniors.
