Four Eagles earn Academic All-MAC honors
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference has released its selections for the Academic All-MAC teams for the 2013-14 men's swimming and diving season Wednesday, April 30. Eastern Michigan University's team ties for second-most in the league with four student-athletes receiving academic accolades while an additional seven Eagles earned honorable mention.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season only are considered.
After winning its first MAC Championship title in school history, Missouri State University boasts the most athletes on the list with eight selections. Eastern, along with Miami University and Southern Illinois University, had four athletes receive the conference honor, followed by the University at Buffalo (2) and Ball State University (1). The 2013-14 season's honorees include: Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity Poland-Adam Mickiewicz Secondary), Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet), Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston), and Dakoda Johnson (Greenwood, Ind.-Center Grove), all of whom earn the accolade for the first time in their careers.
Gilski swam his way into EMU laurels at the 2014 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships, March 6-8, when the sophomore recorded the fastest times in school history in both the 100 and 200 fly. The Polish product earned a conference championship title with a mark of 1:46.01 in the 200 fly, while his time of 48.05 seconds in the 100 fly put him on the podium in the runner-up spot. Gilski claimed victories in the 200 fly five times during the course of the 2013-14 season and picked up another three wins in the 100 fly while also serving as a key member of both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. For his performances, he was named to the All-MAC First Team and earned MAC Swimmer of the Week honors on Oct. 21 and Nov. 11, 2013. He maintains a 3.24 GPA in electronic engineering technology.
A mechanical engineering technology major with a 3.62 GPA, Gissen was an All-MAC Second Team selection at the conference meet. The sophomore was on the runner-up 400 medley relay team at the 2014 MAC Championships and also took fifth in the 100 back after touching the wall at 49.01, while competing in four other events to help the Eagles to a second-place team finish. He held the team season-best in the 50 free for a good majority of the season after winning the event in 20.99 seconds against Oakland, Nov. 9. Throughout the season, he was a staple of the 200 medley relay lineup and was on the 400 free relay A team that won on four separate occassions.
No stranger to being rewarded for athletic and academic accomplishments, Henry was honored twice by the conference as the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week on Jan. 9 and Jan. 27. Additionally, he earned MAC Swimmer of the Week honors on Dec. 9 and Jan. 27 before being named to the All-MAC First Team at the conference championships. The Garner, N.C. native was on the runner-up 400 and 800 free relay teams and also took third in both the 200 and 400 IM, finishing in 1:47.38 and 2:57.54. Henry holds a 3.76 GPA in construction management.
EMU's final Academic All-MAC member is a representative of the diving team. Johnson took sixth on the 1-meter springboard and 14th in the 3-meter dive at the 2014 MAC Championships with marks of 299.30 and 286.70, respectively.
