DES MOINES, Iowa/HILLSDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team completed its extensive four-day schedule at the Drake Relays and the Hillsdale Gina Relays, April 26, in one of the final preparations leading up to the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships, May 15-17.
The Drake Relays were highlighted by a first-place finish and EMU record-breaking performance by Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42). The junior harrier bested her own varsity record set last season at the NCAA Regionals when she clocked a 10:07.18. Voronko now not only leads the MAC by a margin of nearly 20 seconds, but her mark stands as the eighth-best in all of NCAA Division I athletics.
Three events were contested on the field to wrap up the meet in Des Moines, Iowa. In the pole vault, the pair of Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) and Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) both cleared 3.75 meters/12 feet 3.50-inches, which qualifies the sophomore-junior combo for conference meet competition.
Two more top-20 finishes were earned in the hammer throw and triple jump. Lydia Gomez-Diaz (Tarragona, Spain-IES Collblanc) threw for a distance of 50.81 meters/166 feet 8-inches to take 15th in the hammer throw, while Makeda DeBardelaben (Saginaw, Mich.-Arthur Hill) bounded 11.48 meters/37 feet 8.00-inches to grab the 20th spot in the triple jump.
One final event was run in Hillsdale, Mich. for the Green and White after the hammer throw was postponed from the previous day's events. Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) took 20th with a 42.88-meter/140-foot 8-inch launch.
The Eagles will head to Bloomington, Ind. for their first of two more meets in preparation of the MAC Championships, taking on the field at the Billy Hayes Invitational, Friday and Saturday, May 2-3.
