BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field completed its second-to-last regular season meet before the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a successful outing at the Billy Hayes Invitational, May 3 at Indiana University.
The Eagles saw the bulk of their success on the track, claiming four winning finishes. Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) carried on with her outstanding junior campaign with a victory in the 1500m Invitational run, finishing in a personal-best 4:20.87 for the fourth-fastest time in EMU history and a top-20 placement in the NCAA East Region. The Green and White saw similar success in the open section of the 1500m run, as Rebecca Quaintance (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) shaved over 15 seconds off her previous mark to win in 4:44.57.
Rookie Anna Quilez-Ribera (Girona, Spain-University of Girona) picked up her first win of the season in the 3000m steeplechase, crossing the line in 11:17.20. Not far behind the Spanish native was Kayla Pfund (Shelby Twp.-Lutheran North), who took fourth in 11:27.77. The final victory for the squad came at the end of the meet, in which the 4x400m relay team of Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier), Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford), Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif.-Adrian Wilcox), and Agata Klimovich (Minsk, Belarus-Minsk School of Olympic Reserve) won in 3:47.86.
Though not a victory, the 4x100m relay team of Tericka Threatt (Missouri City, Texas-Dulles), Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams), Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum), and Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike) recorded the best time of the season, shaving over three quarters of a second off to finish in 45.84 for a third-place finish. McKinney and Clark went on to lead the Eagles in the 100m and 200m. Both made it through the preliminary heats for the 100m as McKinney finished sixth and Clark took the eighth spot. McKinney retained her sixth-place spot in the championship heat, finishing in 12.05, while Clark moved up to seventh after crossing the line at 12.19. In the 200m, Clark paced her teammate, taking sixth with a personal-best and MAC qualifying time of 24.34 seconds.
Both Yeadon and Hardiman had a personal record-breaking day in the 400m. Yeadon finished third in 56.16 seconds, while Hardiman swept in for the fourth spot in the field at 56.65. The Eagles continued to rack up personal bests on the track, as Manjon-Rivadulla ran the 800m in 2:15.46 for ninth, Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) recorded a time of 15.02 seconds in the 100m hurdles, and Pauline Chiariglione (Ajaccio, France-University of Nice) took fifth in the 400m hurdles in 1:00.90 to punch her ticket to the MAC meet. In her first attempt at the 3000m run, Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind.-Fremont) finished fourth in 10:24.98.
On the field, the Eagles had a pair of top-three performances in the long jump and triple jump. French native Chauchard finished third in the long jump after leaping 5.72 meters/18 feet 9.25-inches to pace a personal-best performance from Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian), as the freshman recorded a distance of 5.58 meters/18 feet 3.75-inches. In the triple jump, Makeda DeBardelaben (Saginaw, Mich.-Arthur Hill) finished third among the field at 12.01 meters/39 feet 5.00-inches, which qualifies the sophomore for conference meet competition.
Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) led the way for the Eagle pole vaulters once more, clearing 3.90 meters/12 feet 9.50-inches for fifth. Taking the sixth spot was Uy, who cleared the same height for her second personal record of the afternoon. Wolanin and Chauchard competed in the high jump and also recorded identical marks, both clearing 1.66 meters/5 feet 5.25-inches for a 6-7 finish in the event.
The Eagles contested two more events on the field, both of which were throws. In the hammer throw, Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) and Reagan Briggs (Bloomdale, Ohio-Elmwood) recorded personal records to finish fifth and sixth, respectively. Waisner threw 48.57 meters/159 feet 4-inches, while Briggs launched for a distance of 47.82 meters/156 feet 11-inches. Chiariglione was the Green and White's representative in the javelin throw, in which she took 10th with a mark of 26.05 meters/85 feet 5-inches.
The squad will remain in-state for the final tune-up meet before the MAC Championships. The Eagles will head to Kalamazoo, where MAC foe Western Michigan University will host the Jack Shaw Classic Friday, May 9.
