FISHERS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – With 18 holes in the books at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team sits in a fourth-place tie with Northern Illinois University after shooting a 314. The day began with rain falling before the showers gave way to overcast skies in the afternoon, as Kent State University leads the way after posting a 296 at the par-72, 6,102 yard Hawthorns Golf and Country Club.

The Golden Flashes hold a six-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down four of the tournament's top 10 slots. Toledo is in second-place with a score of 302, followed by Akron (313), EMU (314), NIU (314), Ohio (318), Ball State (318), Western Michigan (322) and Bowling Green (330).

Individually, UT's Stephanie St-Jean and KSU's Wad Phaewchimplee were the only golfers to shoot par in the first round, carding a 72. The Eagles' redshirt-sophomore Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) and the Golden Flashes' Josee Doyon are one stroke behind with one-over par 73s. Lee Ping was consistent throughout her round as it featured a birdie on No. 14 and bogies on No. 2 and No. 15.

All five Eagles are ranked in the top-40 including junior Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School-Lincoln) who carded a round of 76 to reside in a tie for ninth-place. Senior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada -Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) is tied for 26th with an 81. Freshman Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) and redshirt-junior Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) each notched an 84 for a 36th-place tie.
