EMU Rally Falls Short, 7-6, in Abbreviated Game Against Dayton
4/2/2014 7:05:00 PM | Baseball
The game was called after seven innings due to darkness
EMU scored six runs on seven hits as redshirt-senior Sam Ott picked up a team-best two hits for the Eagles, including a double that knocked in two of his teammates. Leadoff man John Rubino also picked up two RBI to go along with a pair of runs scored, while Nick Rotola crossed the plate twice as well. Freshman Tyler Russell (0-1) was on the losing end of the contest, lasting 2.2 innings and giving up four runs on five hits in his start on the mound.
Dayton reached double figures in hits as three Flyers collected two hits apiece. Senior Ryan Berry went deep for his fourth home run of the season while A.J. Ryan went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. UD freshman starter Nick Gobert (1-1) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two free passes. After Gobert left the game, the Eagles jumped all over the Flyers' bullpen by recording four runs in the seventh inning.
After a scoreless first for both teams, Dayton scored seven runs in the next three innings. UD scored two runs in the second on a pair of hits before adding another deuce in the third. The Flyers' biggest inning came in the bottom half of the fourth as they notched three runs off EMU freshman Sam Delaplane to take a 7-0 advantage.
Eastern started its comeback in the top of the sixth with two runs to cut the lead to five. Rotola singled to begin the inning before he swiped second on a wild pitch. Rubino walked, setting the scene for an Ott double to right field that brought around both Eagles. After a fly-ball out, Michael Mioduszewski took one for the team with a hit by pitch and Jackson Martin reached base via a base on balls to load the bases. However, Dae Bowden hit a grounder to third as the Flyers got the force out at second base to end the inning.
In the final inning, the Eagles tallied four runs. Adam Sonabend delivered a pinch-hit single to start things off, and Rotola walked to become the second Eagle on the base path. Rubino followed by working the count full before smacking a double to left field that plated Sonabend and Rotola. Bowden was patient at the plate to force a walk with the fourth ball in the dirt that allowed Rubino to advance to third. With runners on the corners, Lee Longo knocked in his teammate by reaching on a fielder's choice as Bowden was thrown out at second, leaving Eastern down to its final out. However, the Green and White did not give up, staying patient at the dish. Mioduszewski was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, and Martin walked to load the bases once again. Dayton's pitching continued to struggle finding the strike zone as Adam Dennison reached base via the RBI walk that made it a one-run ballgame, 7-6. Nonetheless, on the first pitch of the at-bat, Sonabend smacked a shot to the hot corner; unfortunately, the ball found the glove of the UD third baseman to allow the Flyers to escape with the shortened-game victory.
The Eagles will wrap up the week with a trip to Muncie, Ind. to battle the Ball State Cardinals in a three-game MAC West showdown. First pitch for the opening game of the series is set for 3 p.m. Friday, April 4, while the other two games will begin at 1 p.m., April 5-6.
