COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team continued to show improvement with the completion of the Jesse Owens Track Classic, April 19, in Columbus, Ohio.
The Eagles saw a pair of victories on the field, as Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) and Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) claimed titles in the high jump and pole vault, respectively. Wolanin cleared a height of 1.70 meters/5 feet 7.00-inches to take her second winning finish of the outdoor season, giving the senior a top-three finish in every meet of the outdoor campaign thus far. Braidic became part of elite company, joining the four-meter club in the pole vault. The sophomore cleared 4.00 meters/13 feet 1.50-inches to become just the fifth Eagle in EMU history to clear four meters in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault. Her mark easily qualifies her for the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, along with teammate Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont), who jumped 3.70 meters/12 feet 1.50-inches to place ninth.
Two more members of the Green and White competed on the field. Lydia Gomez-Diaz (Tarragona, Spain-IES Collblanc) took 12th in the hammer throw, going 53.52 meters/175 feet 7-inches. In the triple jump, Makeda DeBardelaben (Saginaw, Mich.-Arthur Hill) placed in the top-10 after bounding 11.32 meters/37 feet 1.75-inches.
Action started on the track for the day with the 4x100m relay, in which the team of Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike), Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif.-Adrian Wilcox), Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams), and Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P Meyer Lyceum) finished fourth in 46.88. Each went on to compete in individual events throughout the meet. Hardiman ran a personal-best 57.73 in the 400m dash for 13th, while the pair of McKinney and Clark took 13th and 15th, respectively, in the 100m dash. Yeadon paced Wolanin in the 200m, taking 17th. The four Eagles then regrouped to finish off the meet with a sixth-place finish in the 4x400m relay, crossing the line at 3:52.59.
In the 800m run, the pair of Marina Manjon-Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain-Escola University) and Rebecca Quaintance (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) kept pace with each other to take 24th and 26th in 2:17.58 and 2:18.76, respectively. Lastly, four multi-eventers competed in the 100m hurdles, paced by Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) with an 11th-place finish in 14.28.
The Eagles will split venues once more for the following weekend, heading to Des Moines, Iowa for the Drake Relays and Hillsdale, Mich. for the Hillsdale Gina Relays. Competition will be between Thursday, April 24 and Saturday, April 26.
