Jesse Owens Complete Results
WALNUT, Calif./COLUMBUS, Ohio—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team took part in two separate meets on Friday, April 18. A duo of Eagles headed west for the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., while a small group competed in the first portion of the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
Action started off on the West Coast for the Green and White, as Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University) and Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) competed in the Mt. SAC Relays. Kalinowski took fourth in the 1500m run, finishing in 3:46.13 before Brown's breakout performance on the track.
The rookie Eagle won the 400m in 46.02, which is the fastest time in the Mid-American Conference by nearly a second and stands as the 11th-best time in the nation while going down as the fourth-fastest time in EMU laurels. Additionally, Brown's mark makes him the current world leader for the junior (U20) division. According to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Brown beat out Jamaica's Nathon Allen by .09 seconds to take the lead in junior world standings. The Findlay, Ohio native closed out his Mt. SAC appearance with a ninth-place finish in the 200m, clocking in at 21.06 to punch his ticket to the 2014 Outdoor MAC Championships for both the 200m and 400m.
Three events were run at Ohio State University. On the field, Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) took fifth in the javelin throw with a distance of 59.19 meters/194 feet 2-inches, a mark that qualifies the junior for MAC championship competition.
On the track, four out of five competing Eagles recorded MAC qualifying standards. The trio of Harry Dixon (Nelson, New Zealand-Nayland College), Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee), and Warren Witchell (Williamston, Mich.-Dansville) all qualified for the conference meet in the 5000m run, led by Dixon with a career-best 14:12.91 to claim seventh. Fink followed closely behind in eighth, while Witchell anchored the group with a 10th-place finish. In the final event of the evening, Daryl Smith (Windsor, Ontario-Vincent Massey S.S.) took eighth in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking in at 3:51.27.
The Eagles will resume competition at the Jesse Owens Track Classic tomorrow, April 19. The pole vaulters will take the field first at 10 a.m., with first action on the track starting at 12:05 with the 4x100m relay. Live results will be available online via Finish Timing.
