YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was held to just three hits in an 8-2 setback to Miami University Saturday afternoon, April 19, at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles (13-23, 2-12 MAC) scored twice in the ninth, but the comeback fell short as the RedHawks (17-20, 7-7 MAC) took back-to-back games in the Mid-American Conference series.
Two of EMU's three hits came in the bottom of the ninth as the Eagles scored in the final inning for the second straight contest. Adam Dennison smacked a pinch-hit single to right field before Michael Mioduszewski recorded his first career triple on a blast to the gap in right center, plating a pair of Eagles. Sam Ott notched the other hit for the Green and White, reaching base all three times he stepped up to the plate by going 1-for-1 with two walks. Eastern starting pitcher Ryan Lavoie (2-3) allowed two runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings to take the loss.
Miami tallied 16 hits, while scoring eight runs and committing two errors. Leadoff hitter Steve Sada had a huge day for the RedHawks, going 4-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and a pair of extra-base hits. Four other RedHawks tallied two hits apiece, including Dan Walsh and John Crummy as the duo also knocked in two runs each. On the mound for Miami, starter Nathan Williams (3-5) kept Eastern off the scoreboard in seven innings, surrendering just one hit.
The afternoon contest was a pitchers' duel through the first four innings before Miami finally got on the board with two in the top of the fifth. The four hits and two runs in the inning brought an end to Lavoie's day on the rubber as Devon Bronson appeared out of the bullpen to get his team out of the inning.
The visiting RedHawks added four more runs on four hits in the seventh, while chalking up a pair in the eighth to take an 8-0 advantage. Despite the two big innings, freshman Sam Delaplane was able to send Miami down in order in the top of the ninth.
In their last chance at the dish, the Eagles put up a deuce on the scoreboard. Dae Bowden was hit on the first pitch of the inning and advanced to second on the opposite-field base knock by Dennison. After an Andrew Mallon groundout put both runners in scoring position, Mioduszewski found green grass in right center field with a shot that rolled all the way to the wall. As Bowden and Dennison both crossed home plate, the left fielder motored around the bases for a standup triple, the first three-bagger of his young baseball career.
Eastern Michigan will look to win for the third straight Sunday contest at Oestrike Stadium as the Eagles and RedHawks take the field on Easter Sunday, April 20. Junior college transfer Jake Andrews will get the ball for the Green and White, tossing the first pitch at 1 p.m.
