Baseball's Late Charge Not Enough in Series Finale Against Miami

Eagles score seven runs in the final three innings, but fall by two runs to the RedHawks

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After falling behind six runs early, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team battled back with seven runs in the final three innings. However, it was not enough as the Eagles (13-24, 2-13 MAC) fell, 9-7, to the Miami University RedHawks (18-20, 8-7 MAC) on an Easter Sunday afternoon, April 20, from Oestrike Stadium. Three runs by the RedHawks in the top of the ninth, including two off of an error, ended up being the difference in the Mid-American Conference matchup.

Eastern pounded 10 hits throughout the contest, including five that went for extra bases. Sophomore Marquise Gill smacked a triple as well as a double to go along with two runs scored and a RBI. Also, Dae Bowden also recorded a triple, two runs, and one RBI as part of a 2-for-4 showing at the dish. Lee Longo led the way with a team-high three this, while Tony DiLeo added a pinch-hit double in the ninth that plated two of his teammates.

Miami got to EMU starter Jake Andrews (2-4) early as the right-handed junior left after 2.2 innings. Senior Paul Schaak relieved Andrews and pitched effectively once again, lasting 5.1 innings and giving up just one unearned run on five hits while striking out four RedHawks.

MU recorded 15, leading to seven runs, while scoring two in the ninth as an EMU error kept the inning alive. Steve Sada and Matt Honchel each tallied three hits, while Ryan Elble knocked in three runs. Designate hitter Gary Russo went deep for the RedHawks with a solo blast in the top of the first. On the mound, Ryan Powers (4-3) earned the victory by allowing three runs on five hits through seven innings. The Eagles were able to find success off right Charles Zubrod as he pitched the ninth and surrendered four runs on four hits.

The RedHawks' hot hitting throughout the series continued immediately to start the game. Using five hits, including Russo's home run that cleared the left field fence, Miami scored three runs in the top of the first. MU added a pair in the third to knock Andrews out of the ballgame and take a 5-0 lead. Miami tacked on one more run in the sixth off of a miscue in the field by Eastern.

Trailing by six, the EMU bats came to life in the seventh as three hits led to two runs. Longo singled to begin the inning, but Powers seemed to have settled down with back-to-back outs. However, Bowden started a two-out rally with a triple to deep left field, scoring Longo. The Windy City native crossed the plate in the next at bat as Adam Dennison smashed a fastball up the middle for a base hit, cutting the margin to four. Longo contributed with a RBI single in the eighth to score Gill and make it a 6-3 game.

As it started to look like the Eagles could mount a comeback, Miami plated three runs in the ninth to increase its advantage back to six runs. EMU looked to be out of the inning after allowing just one run, but another error led to two more MU runs that ended up being the difference in the ballgame.

Despite entering the bottom of the ninth down by six, the EMU sluggers did not give up by recording four runs on four hits to pose a series threat to pull off a huge comeback. With runners on the corners, DiLeo found the gap in left center to score a pair of Eagles. The backup catcher crossed the dish on a triple by Bowden, and John Rubino hit a chopper over the third baseman's head to bring in his teammate. As Rubino stood on first, Longo stepped up the plate representing the tying run and looking for his fourth hit of the contest. However, it was not meant to be as the first baseman grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop as Rubio was thrown out at second to end the afternoon contest.

The Green and White returns to Oestrike Stadium on Tuesday, April 22, to face off versus the Chargers of Hillsdale College. The mid-week matchup between the two in-state schools in scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. under the lights. It will be the only game of the week for EMU before traveling to Athens, Ohio for a three-game conference series against the Ohio University Bobcats.
