Re-Listen to the Game.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite out-hitting its opponent, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team (13-22, 2-11 MAC) could not take advantage of scoring opportunities, leaving 11 Eagles on base in a 3-1 defeat to the Miami University RedHawks (16-20, 6-7 MAC) Friday night, April 18, at Oestrike Stadium. The Green and White tallied 10 hits compared to just nine for Miami, but EMU was just 1-of-16 in RBI opportunities.
In his 163rd straight start, redshirt-senior Sam Ott knocked in the Eagles' only run en route to a 2-for-4 performance at the dish. Austin Wilson kept up his strong hitting in Mid-American Conference play as of late, tallying a pair of hits that included a double. The Eastern centerfielder crossed the plate on Ott's single in the bottom of the ninth. Six other Eagles recorded a hit throughout the night, including pinch-hitter Tony DiLeo.
Freshman Sterling Sharp (1-3) started on the mound for Head Coach Jay Alexander, and the right-hander pitched a career-high seven innings. The Farmington Hills, Mich. native gave up just three runs on seven hits to drop his earned run average to 4.54 on the season. Fellow freshman Layne Gusler relieved his teammate, using just 10 pitches to get through two innings of scoreless work.
MU's ace, Seth Varner (5-2), surrendered seven hits but did not allow a run in 7.2 innings to pick up the victory. Charles Zubrod (3) allowed one run in the ninth, but earned the save by leaving two Eagles on the base path. At the plate, three RedHawks notched two hits apiece. The three through five spots in the lineup consisting of Dan Walsh, Chad Sedio and Gary Russo each went 2-for-4 off of EMU pitching.
The RedHawks scored first in the top of the second. A walk and a stolen base put a runner in scoring position for Ryan Elble, who doubled to left field to bring in the run. Two doubles led to another run in the fifth, while two singles and a stolen base put Miami up 3-0 after six innings of play.
In a four-inning stretch, Eastern left eight men on base, including three in the bottom of the fifth. Wilson led off the third with a double to deep left field before stealing third. However, he was left stranded as Varner retired three straight Eagles. In the fourth, John Rubino and Lee Longo singled but their teammates were unable to find a way to bring their teammates home. EMU's best opportunity came in the fifth as the home team loaded the bases after an error by the MU first baseman that would have ended the inning. Nonetheless, the Eagles could not find green grass to place the baseball.
Eastern scored once in the top of the ninth and threatened to tie the ballgame. Wilson and DiLeo smacked base hits before Ott brought Wilson around to score on a single to center. With one out and the tying run at first, the EMU bats were unable to plate the pair of Eagles on base as Miami took the opening game of the three-game set.
The Eagles and RedHawks return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon, April 19, at 3 p.m. as EMU looks to even the series. Ryan Lavoie is expected to start on the rubber for the Green and White, while Miami will probably counter with righty Nathan Williams. Tomorrow's game will be broadcast on Eagle All-Access with Chad Bush on the call beginning at 2:45 p.m.
