YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team wrapped up its five-game homestand with a 5-3 loss to the Michigan State University Spartans on "Knock Autism Out of the Park" night at Oestrike Stadium, April 1. The only runs scored occurred in the fourth inning of a game that featured a combined 24 strikeouts among the two teams.
Both teams wore blue socks as part of raising autism awareness, and the Eagles sported "Knock Autism Out of the Park" t-shirts during batting practice.
The EMU arms were able to strike out 14 Spartans on the evening, but also allowed 12 to reach base via walk or hit by pitch. Senior Paul Schaak (0-2) suffered the loss after starting for the Eagles (10-14), allowing one run on one hit in three innings. The lefty sent down six Spartans (13-11) on strikes while walking five. Fellow left-handers Devon Bronson and Ben Dartnell combined to pitch the final four innings, keeping Michigan State off the scoreboard. Dartnell threw the last 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing four hits.
Redshirt-freshman Michael Mioduszewski went 2-for-4 at the dish with an RBI, while four other Eagles recorded one hit apiece for their total of six. Senior Lee Longo continued his strong season with a hit and one run scored. Mitchell McGeein added a pinch-hit double in the bottom of the seventh, but was left stranded on the base path.
Michigan State tallied five runs on nine hits, leaving 13 runners on base throughout the contest. Right fielder Chase Toth led the MSU bats by going 3-for-4 with a double as well as a run and RBI. Two Spartans recorded a pair of hits, including Dan Durkin who also knocked in two runs. Anthony Misiewicz (1-3) earned the win with six scoreless innings, surrendering two hits and fanning nine Eagles.
Schaak got into trouble in the top of the second due to a base hit and a pair of walks. However, the veteran starter stayed calm, striking out back-to-back Spartans to get out of the inning unscathed.
The game's only runs were scored in the fourth inning. The Spartans opened up the scoring with a five-spot in the top of the fourth, but the Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to two. Sam Ott walked before advancing 90 feet on a single from Longo. Tony DiLeo kept the hot bats alive with a base-knock to left that plated Ott and put the Eagles on the scoreboard for the first time. Mioduszewski followed with an opposite-field base hit to score Longo, and DiLeo scampered across the plate due an infield single by Nick Rotola combined with a throwing error by the MSU shortstop.
After the fourth, the Eagles could only muster one baserunner for the remainder of the contest, and that was McGeein with a pinch-hit double to lead off the seventh.
EMU will return to action tomorrow, April 2, hitting the road south to face the Flyers of the University of Dayton. First pitch of the non-conference matchup from Time Warner Cable Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
