YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– In the final time at Bowen Field House for the 2014 season, the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team recorded a season-high 194.900 en route to a runner-up finish as hosts of the Eagle Invitational, Saturday night, March 8. Northern Illinois University won the meet with a season-high 195.100 as EMU (5-9, 1-4 MAC) placed second followed by the Air Force Academy and Temple University with scores of 193.300 and 191.575, respectively.

"As a coaching staff, we are certainly pleased with the way the ladies competed tonight," noted EMU Head Coach Steve Wilce. "Our team score was the best of the season. Unfortunately, we caught Northern Illinois on its best night as well."

NIU's winning score of 195.100 was the Huskies' highest score of the year by quite a margin. Their previous best was a 194.050 against Central Michigan University, March 2. Meanwhile, Eastern recorded its highest score since racking up a 194.800 at the Michigan/Illinois Challenge, Feb. 1.

The Green and White began the meet on vault, tallying a season-best 48.750. All five of the scores that were counted towards EMU's team mark were 9.725 or higher. Junior Anna Willette (Pylesville, Md.-North Harford) led the way with a 9.775 while three Eagles earned 9.750 from the judges. Bianca Jordaan (Oakville, Ontario-Abbey Park) and Paulina Miller (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) notched the number while the 9.750 by sophomore Ashlin Chambliss (Buford, Ga.-Mill Creek) was a personal best. Carrina Lo Bello (Oshawa, Ontario-McLaughlin Collegiate) followed with a 9.725.

NIU took the lead halfway through the meet in large part due to an impressive 49.100 on beam. Meanwhile, the Eagles recorded a 48.625 on bars to stand in second. Freshman Kelsie Brooks (Winston, Ga.-Alexander) continued to provide a spark in the bars lineup, leading the way with a career-high 9.750 to finish third in the event. Lo Bello, Ashley Quinton (Calgary, Alberta-Bishop McNally) and Ariyanna Smith (Gahanna, Ohio-Lincoln) each recorded 9.725 as Willette followed with a 9.700.

EMU recorded another season best in the third rotation with a 49.025 on beam, just 0.050 away from tying a school record. Willette placed third with a career-high 9.850 while Kimberly Ebeyer (Greenwood, Ind.-Whiteland Community) and Kaylee Meyers (Saint Joseph, Mo.-Central) also reached personal bests as both earned 9.825 from the judges. Senior Shawna Ciaramella (Hamilton, Ontatio-St. Mary CSS) kept the trend going with a career-mark of 9.800 while Lo Bello rounded out the scoring with a 9.725.

Ciaramella finished runner-up on floor as she led EMU with a 9.750. Meyers and Miller each added a 9.725 while redshirt-junior Chantelle Loehner (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove) recorded a 9.700. As the Eagles finished up on the floor, the Huskies were on vault, and NIU recorded the top two scores of the night on the apparatus to help secure the quad meet victory.

Eastern Michigan will compete in one last meet before hosting the Mid-American Conference Championships. The Eagles will head to Muncie, Ind. to face off against Ball State University in a Friday night dual, March 14. The battle of the birds will take place a 7 p.m. in Irving Gymnasium.
