BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com)
—Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team had a strong finish to the 2014 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, finishing runner-up behind Missouri State University.  The Eagles finished with 682 points, while the Bears claimed their first ever MAC title with 833 points.

The evening started out with the 1650 free, as four members of the Green and White were picked to grind through the endurance event.  Franco Petrone (Etobicoke, Ontario-Silverthorne Collegiate Institute) paced the Eagles at seventh place, touching in at 15:34.95, while Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) was not far behind in ninth with a 15:36.69 mark.

Still trailing the University at Buffalo by 18 points after the 1650 free, the Eagles pulled into second in the standings following the 200 back by a margin of three points.  Capping off a rookie season that shows promise for his future career at EMU, Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) took third in the event, notching an NCAA B cut at 1:45.40.  Bateman's finish is the second-fastest time in program history.  Also landing on the all-time list was classmate Chris Cutter (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers), who won the consolation heat in 1:48.66, a time that gives the freshman the seventh-fastest performance in EMU laurels.

The Eagles were able to land two swimmers in the top-10 program finishes in the 100 free, which is one of just three events that did not boast a current roster member in its standings.  Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) took third in the championship heat with an NCAA consideration mark of 44.20, which is the third-fastest performance in program history.  Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) claimed fifth overall in 44.49, but his preliminary finish at 44.40 gives the sophomore the fifth spot on the list.

Three consecutive MAC Champions were crowned in the following events, starting with Mike Fisher (Saline, Mich.-Saline)'s record-breaking performance in the 200 breast.  Fisher won by a margin of nearly two seconds in 1:56.82, which is both an EMU and MAC Championship record while also, not surprisingly, an NCAA B cut. Competing alongside Fisher in the championship heat was freshman Kyle Aerne (Lake Villas, Ill.-Lakes Community), who took eighth in a time of 2:02.28.

Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz Secondary) was the next Eagle to stand atop the winner's podium, winning the 200 fly in 1:46.01, which topped the previous EMU record by nearly a second.  Despite an EMU victor in the event, Buffalo was able to build back up to within two points of the Eagles after placing five swimmers in the top-16.  Relying heavily upon the divers to create more distance and secure the runner-up finish, the pair of Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic) and Dan Gironza (New Hudson, Mich.-South Lyon) did not disappoint in the championship round of the 3-meter diving competition.  Chan was named MAC Champion after putting on a 409.80-point performance, while Gironza took fourth with 322.65.

Unable to rattle off four victories in a row, the Green and White took second in a hard-fought 400 free relay.  Missouri State won just over half a second ahead of EMU's 2:57.54 performance put on by Henry, Gus Everson (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky), Dexter Foos (Fremont, Ohio-Fremont-Ross), and Moore.

Seven Eagles were named to the All-MAC teams, while Buck Smith was honored as the Diving Coach of the Year for the 13th time in his time at EMU.  With the finish, the team also ensured that Head Coach Peter Linn has had no lower than a second-place finish in his 25 years at the helm of the program.  The 2014 NCAA Zone C Diving Championships will take place March 13-14 in Columbus, Ohio, while the NCAA Championships will be held in Austin, Texas, March 27-29.
