YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis squad defeated the Youngstown State University program for the second time in EMU history Friday, March 7, at the Chippewa Club. The Eagles (7-6) used a 5-2 decision to knock off the Penguins (5-5).
The match started with doubles play and the Eagles swept the Penguins, picking up the doubles point to head into singles play with a 1-0 advantage. The duo of Diana Davitaia and Maria Paula Ribero was first to upend their competition at No. 2-doubles, 8-3. Next came Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova to take their match, 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, defeating Margarita Sadovnikova and Marta Burak. Zsofia Biro and Mariya Toncheva knocked off Nehel Sahni and Dominika, 8-4, at No. 3 to pick up the clean sweep.
Biro got the Eagles out to a strong start in singles. She was the first to finish with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Carolyn Jesko at No. 6-singles, giving EMU a 2-0 lead in the match overall. Daphne Friedrichs put the Eagles up 3-0 after coming from behind to win the first set versus Nehel Sahni, but she cruised to the match victory after a 6-0 finish in the final set. Mebuke sealed the win for Eastern when she knocked off Annina Brendel in the No. 3-singles match, 6-3, 6-2. Toncheva continued to extend EMU's lead to 5-0 when she defeated Dominika Lackova in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0.
Davitaia dropped a match at No. 2-singles to Burak. After taking the first set, 6-4, Burak came out firing in set two, evening up the match after a 6-0 decision. Burak took the final set 6-4, getting Youngstown State's first point of the afternoon. YSU picked up its second and final point in the last match of the day when Sadovnikova got the best of Supejova in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"It felt good to be back home after five weeks on the road," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Youngstown is a very solid team. I expect them to finish very high in the Horizon League. It's a good win for us, as we will have many competitive matches in the conference season, similar to today."
The Eagles take a two week hiatus before returning to the court, March 21. The Green and White travels to the University at Buffalo for its first Mid-American Conference match of the season. The Eagles and Bulls will square off at the UB Tennis Center Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
