The Green and White open the season 1-0 in MAC play
BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened up Mid-American Conference play Friday, March 21, with a match versus the University at Buffalo. The Eagles (8-6, 1-0 MAC) defeated the Bulls (9-3, 0-1 MAC) by a score of 4-3 at the UB Tennis Center to open the conference season with a victory.
The Green and White dropped the doubles point, as the team of Klara Supejova and Nino Mebuke was the only duo to win a doubles match. That team took down Tanvi Shah and Miranda Podlas, 8-3, at No. 1-doubles, while the team of Diana Daviataia and Maria Paula Ribero fell at No. 2 and Mariya Toncheva and Zsofia Biro dropped the No. 3 matchup.
The top of Eastern's singles lineup made quick work of the Bulls, picking up three-straight points. Supejova dispatched Shah quickly, 6-3, 6-3, to knot things up at one point apiece. Mebuke followed suit with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3-singles, topping Margarita Kotok. Davitaia gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead after putting down Podlas, 7-5, 6-2, in the No. 3 spot. Daphne Friedrichs was next to finish her match, falling to Anamaria Candanoza at No. 5, 6-4, 6-1, but Biro locked up the Green and White's first MAC win after taking down Marta Stoyanova, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, in the sixth spot. Toncheva dropped her match at No. 4-singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
"This is a good road win to start the MAC season," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We got outplayed in doubles, but turned the momentum around in singles in a hurry. Zsofia sealed the match with great intensity coming back from 5-3 down in the 3rd set."
The Eagles continue MAC play tomorrow, March 22, when they travel to Akron, Ohio to square off with the University of Akron Zips. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Latuchie Tennis Center.
