Eastern Michigan Stays Perfect in MAC Play After Knocking off Akron

EMU took down the Zips, 6-1, on the road

AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – After opening up the Mid-American Conference slate with a 4-3 victory over the University at Buffalo Friday afternoon, March 21, the Eagles (9-6, 2-0 MAC) continued their winning ways, March 22, when they thumped the University of Akron, 6-1, at the Latuchie Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles took the doubles point after the duo of Klara Supejova and Nino Mebuke knocked off Olga Shkundina and Shannon Newnes, 8-1, at the No. 1 doubles spot, before Diana Davitaia and Maria Paula Ribero defeated Karolina Maksimava and Ksenia Berestetska, 8-4, in the No. 2 slot. Mariya Toncheva and Zsofia Biro won, 8-6, at the No. 3 position.

Supejova led things off with a win at No. 1-singles after she took set one from Madison Cohen, 6-1, before Cohen retired in the second frame. Davitaia shook down Maksimava, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot and Mebuke cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3. Daphne Friedrichs picked up a win at No. 4 in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 and Biro was the final victor for EMU after a 6-0, 6-1 decision versus Marta Briega.

"This was a good road weekend for us," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We know we have great teams ahead of us, yet and we need to stay on track and get ready for some battles ahead."

The Eagles are off until Friday, March 28, when the Broncos from Western Michigan University come calling to Ypsilanti. The match with WMU is scheduled for 1 p.m.
