RIO VERDE, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) and Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) each fired opening rounds of 74 to lead the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team Friday afternoon, March 7, at the Rio Verde Invitational. The tandem are tied for 12th place, while the Eagles are in third place as a team with a 301 on the par 71, 6,209-yard Quail Run Course at the Rio Verde Country Club.

Behind Murphy and Schoof, senior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) sits in a tie for 23rd place after a first round score of 76. Redshirt sophomore Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) is tied for 28th with a 77, while Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School-Lincoln) is tied for 85th with an 83.

The University of Montana shot a 298 in the first round and holds a one shot lead over Wichita State University with a 299. EMU is third with a 301 followed by Xavier University, Western Michigan University and Ball State in a tie for fourth at 303. Northern Illinois University's Sydney Brickey holds down the top on the leader board with an even-par 71.

Round two of the Rio Verde Invitational will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 6.
