—With the first day of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in the books, Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team currently sits in second place with 197 points.  The Eagles have a five-point edge on third-place contender the University at Buffalo, but remain considerably far behind the leader at the end of the day's events, as Missouri State University amassed a commanding 245 points in the first day of competition.

The level of competition in this year's field was evident starting from the first event, in which the Eagles took fifth in the hotly-contested 200 free relay. The four-man crew of Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet), Gus Everson (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky), Oded, Ivry (Haifa, Israel-The Hebrew Reali School), and Dexter Foos (Fremont, Ohio-Fremont-Ross) finished 1:20.88, just over one second behind the winning lineup from Missouri State.

The Eagles placed two swimmers in the championship round of the 500 free, ending the race with a 5-6 finish from Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) and Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.).  Moore took fifth behind a 4:25.45 mark while his freshman counterpart clocked in at 4:27.38.  Lichtenberg's time is the eighth-fastest performance in EMU annals, while Moore's preliminary round time of 4:24.26 etches the junior into the third spot on the all-time list.

Sophomore Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) earned the first podium finish of the meet for Eastern, taking third in the 200 IM in 1:47.38.  His time is not only an NCAA Championship consideration mark, but it is the second-fastest finish in the event in EMU laurels.  Also earning spots among the program's top athletes were freshman Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) and junior Mike Fisher (Saline, Mich.-Saline).  Bateman took eighth overall and his preliminary mark of 1:50.56 stands as the eighth-best time in program history; Fisher's 12th-place time of 1:51.08 sneaks the local product into the 10th spot.

Following a slight break between the 200 free relay and their next event, the EMU sprinters were able to rack up a few points for the Green and White in the 50 free.  Foos took fifth in 20.50 and Ivry notched a 21.60 for 16th in the field.

After the 50 free, the Eagles sat in third place behind Buffalo by a margin of 19 points.  With the help of some solid performances from the diving squad, EMU was able to pull ahead of the Bulls going into the final event.  The Green and White saw three members of the team in the championship finals for the 1-meter dive, led by rookie Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic).  Chan scored 333.80 points for a fourth-place finish, while Dakoda Johnson (Greenwood, Ind.-Center Grove) and Dan Gironza (New Hudson, Mich.-South Lyon) took sixth and seventh, respectively.  In total, the divers were able to string together 51 points for the team, as Buffalo took away 29 points and Missouri State recorded 25 points in the event.

The Eagles had a solid effort in the 400 medley relay, but had to settle for second in the race after a record-breaking performance from Missouri State.  The quartet of Bateman, Fisher, Gissen, and Moore touched in at 3:13.48 while the seasoned veteran Bears team finished in 3:10.95.  Despite the runner-up finish, the Green and White finished by a margin of over two seconds ahead of third-place Buffalo.

The second day of competition will begin tomorrow, March 7 at 11 a.m.  The preliminary rounds for the 400 IM will serve as the opening heats, and the championship and consolation heats will begin at 7 p.m.  Live results and video streaming can be found through mac-sports.com.
