CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team completed its first outdoor competition of the 2014 campaign with a two-day trip to the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati, March 28-29. A handful of Eagles showed improvement from past seasons, while newcomers were able to don the Green and White for their first career outdoor season.
Recording the top individual finish for the Eagles was Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior) who finished runner-up in the 400m hurdles in 55.66. Also landing in the top-10 were Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community) and Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wisc.-Bradford) in 58.07 and 59.33, respectively. Elam also competed in the 110m hurdles in 15.69 behind Selvig and Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior), who took fifth in 14.90. The Latrobe, Pa. native also participated in the winning 4x100m relay along with Lindsey, Wayne Blanchard (Toledo, Ohio-St. Francis de Sales) and Mike Griffin (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul). The group of sprinters won by a slim margin in 42.47. Notching the only other top-three finish for the Green and White was Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), who took third in the 800m in 1:56.70.
Competing in a variety of events was Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Northview), who took part in the 400m dash, 110m hurdles, discus throw, and javelin throw. Waldron tried his hand at every event for the first time in his career at EMU, as the sophomore's niche lies primarily in the high jump. Taking his place in the high jump, classmate James O'Shea (Toledo, Ohio-St. Johns Jesuit) recorded a personal best of 1.93 meters/6 feet 4.00-inches, adding over three inches to his outdoor record.
A pair of newcomers made their outdoor debut in the long jump, paced by Aaron Dewberry (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Portage Northern), who leapt for a distance of 6.02 meters/19 feet 9.00-inches. Freshman jumper Antwan Persons (Dayton, Ohio-Chaminade Julienne) jumped 5.45 meters/17 feet 10.75-inches to round out the top-10 finishes in the event.
After a record-setting performance from Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville) in yesterday's hammer throw competition, the EMU throwers returned to take part in the shot put and discus throw. Travis Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) led the squad in both events, going 15.43 meters/50 feet 7.50-inches in the shot put and 41.59 meters/136 feet 5-inches in the discus throw. Earning the spot directly behind Harris in both events was freshman Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio-River Valley), coming just an inch and a half short of his sophomore counterpart in the shot put and was less than three feet off his mark in the discus throw.
The Eagles will stay in-state for their next competition, heading to Michigan State University for the Spartan Invitational, Saturday, April 5.
