ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team secured its fourth victory in Mid-American Conference competition with a 68-55 decision over MAC East foe Ohio University, Feb. 9, at the Convocation Center. The Green And White took the lead two minutes into the matchup and never relinquished the advantage throughout the remainder of the game.
With the win, the Eagles boost its record to a 14-8 (4-7 MAC), while the Bobcats fall to 8-14 (3-8 MAC).
The Green and White was led by the freshman duo of Cha Sweeney (Toledo, Ohio-Rogers) and Janay Morton (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Osseo), who combined for 35 of the team's total points. Sweeney poured in 19 points, while Morton contributed 17 points, 13 of which came solely in the second half. Also on the leaderboard was Olivia Fouty (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Northview), who notched her eighth double-double of the 2013-14 season with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior Desyree Thomas (Waterford, Mich.-Mott) led all players with seven assists and an additional three steals.
As a team, the Eagles shot 25-of-56 for 44.6 percent, while the Bobcats were held to 20-of-53 shooting for 37.7 percent.
Ohio was led by Kiyanna Black, who dropped in 11 points thanks in large part to a trio of three-pointers and pulled down seven rebounds. Ohio held a slight advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Green and White 38-33. The Bobcats also had the edge in the paint, pouring in 26 points from the key.
Quiera Lampkins was the first to score in the contest following a feed in the low post, but the sophomore forward fouled Morton off a mid-range jumper, which allowed the Green and White to knot the score at two apiece following a pair of successful shots from the charity stripe. The Eagles quickly took the lead as Thomas came away with a steal and a run down-court for a layup.
The Green and White played a bout of clean and tenacious defense, not allowing the Bobcats to score for over three minutes since the opening basket. Meanwhile, a pair of points in the paint from Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio-Brush) and Fouty extended the lead to 8-2. A trey from Sweeney, dished out by Fouty, brought the Eagles up nine points over the Bobcats with just four minutes expired on the clock.
Ohio found a slight offensive spark, as Lexie Baldwin made her way to the hoop for an easy two and Kiyanna Black hit back-to-back triples to close in on the Eagles' edge, as EMU then led by five points courtesy of a 15-10 count. The Bobcats turned on their defense and came away with a handful of steals, all the while putting up a myriad of three-point attempts. The work on the perimeter opened up the lane for Destini Cooper, who made her way to the basket with ease for a layup, bringing the Bobcat deficit to just 15-12 with 11:23 remaining in the half.
The Bobcats relied heavily on their inside and outside game, as Cooper dropped in another pair of points and Black hit her third trey of the afternoon. Meanwhile, the Eagles continued to make their way to the basket, building off a pair of layups around the defense from the spritely Thomas, who had also used her speed to pressure the Ohio squad and force many of the Bobcats' turnovers.
Riding a 24-17 advantage after a 5-0 run, Lampkins poured in the next three points off a layup and free throw, but Sweeney immediately answered back to extend the lead after a shot from beyond the arc. The two teams exchanged threes as Thomas and Yamonie Jenkins each hit one for their respective teams. The Bobcats were unable to convert on a last-second attempt to score as the clock wound down, as the Eagles left for the locker room with a 32-23 advantage.
At the half, the Eagles were sitting comfortably at a 44.0 shooting percentage thanks to going 11-of-25 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point land. Leading the squad was Sweeney, whose two treys and a perfect appearance behind the free throw line contributed to her 10 points in the opening 20 minutes. Thomas followed closely behind with nine points and led the team with three assists. On the boards, Fouty pulled down four rebounds for the Green and White.
The Bobcats were held to 9-of-25 shooting for a 36.0 clip. Ohio put up 15 shots from beyond the arc, but was only able to convert on four of the attempted three-pointers. As a team, the home squad out-rebounded the Eagles 17-14, but gave up three more turnovers as the Bobcats surrendered the ball 10 times to the Green and White.
Ohio's Baldwin came out hot early in the second half, as the forward drove in for a layup and hit a three-pointer on her next trip down the court. With the addition of a free throw from rookie forward Hannah Boesinger, the Bobcats found themselves within three points, trailing 32-29 in the opening two minutes of the second half.
After being held scoreless for the first three minutes of play in the period, Morton hit back-to-back three-pointers, which sparked a scoring outburst for both times. In a three-minute window, the count rocketed to 46-40, still in favor of the Green and White. Morton led the way for the Eagles, as 10 of the 14 points in that time span came from the rookie sensation.
The squad was able to slow the game and prevent the Bobcats from scoring for five minutes while adding a few more points to the count. Fouty hit a sideline three and Phillis Webb (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Osseo) drove in for an easy two to help the Green and White build up at a 53-40 advantage.
Ohio ended its scoring drought with back-to-back offensive rebounds and layups from Cooper, but Morton and Fouty each hit a triple following Cooper's putbacks to keep the Bobcats from chipping away at the score. Holding a 61-46 advantage with seven minutes to play, both teams struggled to form an efficient play when in possession of the ball. Closing down on the expiration of the shot clock following a scramble to score, Fouty hit her third three-pointer to boost the Green and White to nearly a 20-point edge.
Jenkins hit a triple in the last 20 seconds to put up the final points in the matchup, but the Bobcats still trailed by a considerable margin as the Eagles claimed their fourth MAC victory, 68-55.
The Eagles return to action following nearly a week-long break, when the squad will host MAC East leader Bowling Green State University Saturday, Feb. 15. The contest is slated for 4:30 p.m. inside the Convocation Center as the second leg of the Hall of Fame Weekend doubleheader.
