Eagles fall in heartbreaking fashion in final bout of the afternoon
COLUMBIA, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad fell, 18-15, to No. 9 Missouri University in heartbreaking fashion, dropping the final bout of the match in a Mid-American Conference dual, Saturday, Feb. 8.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 9-7 overall on the season and 1-4 in MAC duals. Meanwhile, No. 9 Missouri improves to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in league matches. EMU and the Tigers split the dual with five wins apiece, but two extra-point bouts allowed MU to take the narrow three-point victory.
"I was extremely happy with our effort today." said Head Coach Derek DelPorto, "We split five matches apiece with the No. 9 team in the country. We had our chances to beat them and fell just shy. We got taken down with a few seconds left at 157 lbs. to lose, and I thought we had England pinned at 174 lbs. Regardless, I think our guys felt great going into the match and gained confidence from this tight dual."
The Eagles got out to a fast start over the powerful Missouri squad when Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) kept Barlow McGhee to only one escape, taking the 7-1 decision. Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) grabbed his fifth conference victory with an 8-3 decision over No. 20 Matt Manley at 133 lbs., extending the Green and White lead to 6-0.
The Tigers earned extra points at 141 lbs. and 149 lbs. as No. 19 Lavion Mayes secured a major decision and No. 1 Drake Houdashelt clinched a technical fall with an 18-3 victory. Missouri won its third-straight bout at 157 lbs. when Joseph LaVallee won in a low scoring 3-1 decision with a last second takedown over Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia).
Eastern grabbed three-straight victories of its own, starting with Dean Vettese (Rochester, Mich.-Rochester) earning his second MAC victory with a 8-6 decision at 165 lbs. Sophomore Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) knotted the score at 12-12 in the 174 lb. weight class as he clinched a 10-7 decision before Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) handed the Eagles their second lead of the afternoon with a 5-2 decision over Missouri's Cody Johnson.
The Tigers tied the score at 15-15 when No.3 J'Den Cox clinched a 10-4 decision at 197 lbs. With the match on the line in the heavyweight division, Missouri's Devin Mellon secured a 5-2 decision, allowing the No. 9 Tigers to take the 18-15 victory from Eastern.
The Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 9 when they travel to Edwardsville, Ill. to close out its non-conference schedule with duals against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 11 a.m. and a neutral site match against Campbellsville at 1 p.m.
