YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Three days after Head Coach Derek DelPorto became the winningest wrestling coach in EMU history, the Eastern Michigan University grapplers will head to Columbia, Missouri for a Mid-American Conference dual, Saturday Feb. 8 before heading to Edwardsville, Ill. Sunday, Feb. 9 for two non-conference matches.
SCOUTING THE NO. 9 TIGERS: Missouri comes into Saturday's match as the No. 9 team in the nation according to USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll. The Tigers post a 6-2 overall record on the season and a 3-1 record in Mid-American Conference competition as their only loss came to No. 5 Northern Iowa, Jan. 24.
Three of Missouri's 10 starters are currently ranked as Drake Houdashelt is the No. 1 wrestler in the 149 lb. weight class, boasting a 27-1 record on the year. Freshman J'Den Cox has earned a spot in the rankings as he currently is the No. 3 grappler at 197 lbs., posting a 26-2 record in his first season at Missouri, while Lavion Mayes is ranked 19th at 141 lbs.
Barlow McGhee (125 lbs.) and Matt Manley (133 lbs.) lead the team in decisions as each have tallied 16 apiece, while Houdashelt has secured the most extra points for the Tigers with six major decisions, five technical falls and six pins. As a team, Missouri has 109 pins, 96 major decisions and 47 technical falls.
This is the first season that Missouri is a full-time member of the MAC as the dual will be the first time the two squads meet up in conference competition and the third time in the programs histories. Mizzou holds the 2-0 advantage as the Eagles have been unable to secure more than six points over the Tigers. Eastern first fell in the 2010-11 season, 32-6. In its latest meeting, EMU fell 25-6 in the 2011-12 season.
A GLANCE AT SIU-EDWARDSVILLE: The Cougars will be looking to break a five-bout losing streak heading into their three weekend duals. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville is 3-10 overall on the season as the team has not found a win since Dec. 8, 2013 when the Cougars defeated Drexel.
David Devine headlines the heavyweight division for SIUE as he posts a team-high 14 wins on the season, while Jake Residori has picked up 13 wins at 174 lbs. Patrick Myers (133 lbs.) and Drew Vrbenec (141 lbs.) have each nabbed eight wins for the Cougars, while Devine posts a team-high six dual victories.
In the Eagles' and Cougars' last meeting, Eastern took the easy 38-6 victory, Jan. 29, 2012 at the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Quad Meet. The Green and White won 7-of-10 bouts as redshirt-seniors Jared Germaine and Nick Whitenburg each clinched victories for EMU.
SIZING UP CAMPBELLSVILLE: Campbellsville boasts a 22-5 overall record this season as the team has faced two common oppenents with Eastern. Two of the Tigers' losses came at the hands of Clarion and Kent State, whom EMU split with this year, defeating Clarion and falling to Kent State in MAC competition.
Campbellsville is ranked No. 5 in NAIA polls as the Tigers dropped their first NAIA match to No. 6 Lindsay Wilson College.
DELPORTO BECOMES WINNINGEST COACH IN EMU WRESTLING HISTORY: Head Coach Derek DelPorto became the winningest coach in EMU Wrestling history, Wednesday, Feb. 5, as the Eastern Michigan University grapplers took down Cleveland State, 29-12, at Woodling Arena.
DelPorto now holds an 81-73-2 all-time record in his eight seasons at Eastern Michigan, which broke John Eisley's record of 80-74-4 over a 12 year span at EMU.
EMU RAIDS VIKING TERRITORY: Eastern clinched its ninth victory of the season as it took a decisive 29-12 win in Cleveland, Ohio, Feb. 5. as the Eagles notched a win in 7-of-10 bouts on the night.
Redshirt-senior Jared Germaine gave Eastern the early 6-0 advantage as he pinned CSU's John Martin in just 45 seconds, which is the second fastest pin of the year for EMU as Shayne Wireman took down Manchester's David Melendez in just 35 seconds at the MSU Open, Nov. 9, 2013. Redshirt-sophomore Vincent Pizzuto picked up his fifth-straight victory as Daniel King forfeited at 133 lbs, allowing the Green and White to take the 12-0 lead before Nicholas Barber extended the Eagle lead to 15 with a 4-2 decision at 141 lbs.
The Vikings continued to chip away at the Green and White as Matt Donohoe earned his first pin of the year at 165 lbs., before the Eagles went on to win three-straight bouts and secure their ninth win of the 2013-14 season.
EASTERN GETTING BACK ON TRACK: After breaking a five-dual losing streak, the Eagles will look to get back to their winning ways as they will compete in five duals in the next 10 days. The Eagles defeated Cleveland State, Wednesday, Feb. 5, making Head Coach Derek DelPorto the winningest coach in EMU wrestling history with a 29-12 victory over the Vikings.
Eastern will head to Missouri for a conference dual against the Tigers, Saturday, Feb. 8 before having two non-conference duals against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Campbellsville, Sunday, Feb. 9 in Edwardsville, Ill.
With little time to rest, Eastern will close out its 2013-14 regular season schedule with two MAC duals as it will take on tough conference opponent Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant, Feb. 13, before returning home for one final dual against Buffalo, Sunday, Feb. 16.
The Eagles have already secured more wins this year than last and, if EMU could win out the remainder of the 2013-14 schedule, it would tie its 14 wins from the 2011-12 season.

Pizzuto makes his second appearance in the MAC poll as he is currently riding a five-match win streak heading into Saturday's bout. The redshirt-sophomore is 15-6 on the season and is the only EMU grappler to remain undefeated in conference comeptition after defeating No. 18 Mack McGuire of Kent State less than a week ago.
