Eagles defeat Campbellsville 41-3 before taking down Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 24-13

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team closed out its non-conference schedule with two wins in Edwardsville, Ill., Sunday, Feb. 9. The Eagles first took a decisive 41-3 victory over Campbellsville before finishing the afternoon with a 24-13 win over host, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

"We didn't wrestle with quite the same energy and intensity, but we did enough to win," said Head Coach Derek DelPorto, "This has been a very long road trip and overall I am happy with our effort."

With the wins, the Green and White improve to 11-7 overall on the season. Eastern defeated Campbellsville with its largest margin of victory this year, grabbing wins in nine of the 10 bouts. Six of the Eagle victories were extra point matches with Dean Vettese (Rochester, Mich.-Rochester) and Mike Curby (Osseo, Mich.-HIllsdale) pinning their opponents, James Klosz (Parma, Ohio-Holy Name) and Cole Dillman (Leola, Pa.-Conestoga Valley) notching major decisions and both Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich,-Saginaw Valley) and Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) winning by forfeit.

EMU's final three victories of the dual came by decision as Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt) wrestled up a weight class at 133 lbs., earning a 4-2 decision, while Mike LeHolm (Jackson, Mich.-Jackson Northwest) clinched a 3-1 decision at 149 lbs. and Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) notched a 13-11 victory at 174 lbs.

After defeating the Tigers, Eastern turned around to take its second victory of the day as it won its first three bouts of the match against SIUE. Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) secured his third victory of the week and sixth-straight win as he won by major decision at 133 lbs., while Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) added a second extra point win for the Green and White with a 14-3 major decision at 141 lbs.

The Cougars responded with two decisions and a major decision of their own at 149 lbs., 165 lbs., and 174 lbs. before the Eagles won back-to-back bouts at 184 lbs. and 197 lbs. Redshirt-senior Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) notched the third major decision for EMU before Abro earned his second victory of the day at 197 lbs.

Southern Illinois-Edwardsville earned a sudden victory in the heavyweight division, but it was not enough as Eastern had already clinched the win in the previous bouts.

"We really need to fix our mistakes and be ready for Central and Buffalo this week," stated DelPorto, "These last two duals are very important."

With little time to rest, Eastern will close out its 2013-14 regular season schedule with two MAC duals as it will take on tough conference opponent Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant, Feb. 13, before returning home for one final dual against Buffalo, Sunday, Feb. 16.
