FORT MYERS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell to in-state rival Oakland University, 5-3, in a non-conference contest at the FGCU Softball Complex Wednesday, Feb. 26 before dropping its fourth-straight game of the season to Florida Gulf Coast, 7-2.
With the losses, Eastern falls to 5-8 overall on the season as Katy Wyman led the Eagles with three RBI on the day and Amanda Stanton notched two hits.
Game One: Oakland 5, Eastern Michigan 3
The Grizzlies were the first to score using an inning plagued with EMU defensive errors to tally four runs in the bottom of the third. A leadoff walk issued to Lauren Mead turned into a run for Oakland when Erika Polidori singled through the left side of the field and stole second causing an Eastern miscue.
The Eagles were unable to recover on the next play when a single to third base brought in a second run for OU on a defensive error. A third-straight blunder from the Green and White defense allowed a third run to cross the plate before a double to the center field gap gave the Grizzlies a 4-0 advantage over Eastern in the top of the third inning.
After retiring the OU batters in order in the top of the sixth inning, EMU was able to use some defensive errors to their advantage in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs on three hits and two OU miscues. Senior Lindsay Smith had a leadoff walk before Abby Davidson singled and both runners advanced on a Grizzly error to put runner in scoring position for Amanda Stanton. Stanton lined a single through the infield, allowing both Smith and Davidson to cross the plate for EMU.
The Green and White came within one of Oakland when Wyman singled up the middle to score Stanton before the final two outs of the inning were retired.
Oakland tacked on one final security run in the top of the seventh inning before sitting down the Eagles in order in order in the bottom half of the inning to take the 5-3 victory.
Stanton led the EMU offense with two hits, one RBI and one run, while Wyman knocked in one RBI on one hit. Senior pitcher Lauren Wells (2-3) suffered the loss in the circle pitching all seven innings with two strikeouts while giving up only one earned run on six OU hits.
Morgan Muron propelled the Oakland offense with two doubles and driving in the Grizzlies lone RBI, while Rae Beadlescomb (3-4) grabbed the win in the circle hurling all seven innings with six strikeouts.
Game Two: Florida Gulf Coast 7, Eastern Michigan 2
After two and a half scoreless innings, Florida Gulf Coast led off the bottom of the third with a single to left field before a sacrifice fly and a passed ball advanced the runner to third base for Makensie McAvoy. McAvoy ripped a single up the middle to hand FGCU a 1-0 lead over Eastern.
EMU answered in the top of the fourth inning when back-to-back singles from Jenn Lucas and Davidson put runners on first and second before Taylor Wagner drove a single up the middle to load the bases for the Green and White. Wyman had perfect execution when she doubled to the grass, scoring both Lucas and Davidson to allow Eastern to take a 2-1 advantage.
Errors in the field once again caused problems for EMU in the bottom of the fifth when two-straight blunders put runners on first and second while a walk loaded the bases for Chelsea Zgrabik, who singled up the middle to score two unearned runs for FGCU. The Eagles of Fort Myers tacked on another three runs when Kirsten Bembnowki lined a home run over the left field wall, extending the Florida Gulf Coast lead to 6-2.
FGCU added one final run in the bottom of the sixth inning when the third unearned run crossed the plate on a Zgrabik single through the left side of the field.
An Abi Clark single to left field with two outs looked to start a rally for the Eagles but Florida Gulf Coast used a fly ball to close out the contest and clinch a 7-2 victory over Eastern.
Wyman led the EMU offense in game two tallying two RBI on her one hit, while Davidson had two hits and junior Lindsay Rich (2-3) took the loss in the circle, throwing six innings.
Zgrabik and Bembnowki paced the FGCU offense with three RBI apiece, while Jaclyn Owen (2-0) grabbed the win, hurling all seven innings with three strikeouts.
Eastern Michigan will be back in action Thursday, February 27 when it takes on Bethune-Cookman in a single game in Fort Myers. First pitch of the single game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
