Eagles Unable to Hold Off Rockets in 80-73 Setback

Toledo hands EMU ninth MAC loss of the season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team could not overcome an early deficit, falling to the University of Toledo, 80-73, Wednesday, Feb. 19, in a Mid-American Conference contest at the Convocation Center. The Eagles fall to 14-10 (4-9 MAC), while the Rockets advance to 13-11 (8-5 MAC).
Eastern was led in scoring by Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio–Brush) and Cha Sweeney (Toledo, Ohio–Rogers), who netted 18 points apiece. Watkins also led the team with 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the 2013-14 season, and tied Desyree Thomas (Waterford, Mich.–Mott), with two steals. Thomas also led the team with seven assists.
As a team, the Eagles went 27-of-74 (36.5 percent) from the field and went 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) on threes. Toledo got the best of the Eagles on the boards (50-36), but EMU made up for it topping the Rockets in steals (6-2), blocks (4-1), and assists (15-13). Toledo also commited more turnovers with 13 to the Green and White's seven.
The Rockets got off to a strong start going up by eight within just a few minutes of tip off before Thomas' second steal of the night led to a Sweeney trey to put the Eagles on the board, trailing 8-3, with 15 minutes left in the first half.
Janay Morton (Brooklyn Park, Minn.–Osseo) and Sweeney helped to reduce the Green and White's deficit to 10-9, before the two teams began going back-and-forth exchanging baskets. The teams combined for 11 points in 60 seconds, playing to a 14-14 tie to that point.
Toledo called a timeout at 8:53, and came out strong going up 18-14 before Olivia Fouty (Toledo, OhioSylvania Northview) would answer back with a jumper from the field to bring the Eagles back within two.
A three from Sweeney tied the game at 24 apiece with less than four minutes remaining in the half. Thomas gave the Eagles their first lead of the night with a trip to the charity stripe, before Brianna Jones and Ana Capotosto took back the lead for the Rockets, 29-25. Toledo kept its momentum rolling into half time leading the Eagles, 35-29.
The Eagles went 11-of-30 (36.7 percent) from the field and 4-of-11 (36.4 percent) on threes in the first half. The Rockets went 15-of-35 (42.9 percent) and pulled down 26 rebounds to Eastern's 14. The Eagles held the advantage in swiping the ball with three steals to Toledo's one, and had only four turnovers to Toledo's seven. Sweeney paced EMU with 10 points in the first half.
The Rockets came out of the half with their momentum intact, going up 43-33 within the first few minutes. A Sweeney trey and back-to-back trips to the charity stripe by Morton and Watkins brought the Eagles within five points of the Rockets, 45-40, with less than 13 minutes to play.
Inma Zanoguera and Brianna Jones answered back immediately, bringing the Rockets' lead back to 50-40 going in to the second media timeout of the half.
A Watkins jumper and one brought the Green and White within six before another the senior tallied another jumper on her next trip down the court, trailing Toledo by three, 53-50. Watkins followed up her eight-point scoring run with a steal and two points from the charity stripe to get Eastern within one point, 53-52.
Toledo went on a six-point scoring run before Sara Stone (Plymouth, Mich.-Salem) and Thomas would end the Eagles' two and-a-half minute scoring drought to bring the score to 58-56 with five minutes remaining in the game.
Both teams came out of the last media timeout of the game scoring seven points apiece to make it 68-63 before an Head Coach Tory Verdi called an EMU timeout with less than two minutes to play.
The Green and White's final points came from a Fouty layup and one as the Eagles fell to the Toledo Rockets, 80-73.
The women's basketball team his the road Sunday, Feb. 23, for a trip to Muncie, Ind. to battle the Ball State Unuversity Cardinals. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Wothern Arena.
