Box Score

LINCOLN, Neb. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis squad dropped a road dual to the No. 49-ranked University of Nebraska Friday, Feb. 14. The Eagles took two matches overall, both of which were won in singles competition. With the loss, the Green and White drop to 6-4 on the young spring campaign.

The doubles competition started off the evening, as EMU's Mariya Toncheva and Maria Paula Ribero fell first at the No. 2-doubles spot. Maike Zeppernick and Izabella Zgierska knocked off the Eastern duo quickly, dispatching them by a tally of 8-1. Klara Supejova and Nino Mebuke then fell at the No. 1 spot, 8-6, as Maggy Lehmicke and Mary Hanna took down EMU's top squad. Daphne Friedrichs and Zsofia Biro were unable to finish their tangle with the Cornhuskers at No. 3-doubles after Nebraska won the first two doubles matches, taking a 1-0 lead.

EMU fared much better in singles competition, however it was unable to do enough to defeat the nationally ranked Cornhuskers. Ribero was defeated at No. 6-singles first when Hannah Sulz put down a 6-2, 6-1 win. Diana Davitaia was first to bring home a winning decision for the Eagles at No. 2-singles. Davitaia dispatched Zgierski fairly easily, 6-1, 6-4 before Mebuke's match at No. 3 was the next to be completed. The Tbilisi, Georgia native defeated Mary Hanna, 7-6, 6-2, knotting up the match at two wins apiece.

Nebraska regained the lead, 3-2, when the No. 80-ranked singles player in the country, Maggy Lehmicke, defeated Supejova in a hard fought, 7-5, 6-4 decision in the No.1-singles match. The Cornhuskers then took home the win when Zeppernick defeated Friedrichs in the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 7-5. The No. 4-singles matchup was the final one played in the competition and Toncheva came up on the short end of the three set, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 decision.

"This was over a four hour battle tonight," mentioned Head Tennis Coach Ryan Ray. "Again, we put ourself in a position to win against a strong opponent in Nebraska.  However, they pulled out the final two close matches.  We are playing close to the same level as good teams, and someday we will break out one of these close ones."

The Eagles continue their season Saturday, Feb. 15, when they play another match in Lincoln, Neb. at 3 p.m. CT. The Green and White will take on Illinois State University in a neutral site matchup at Nebraska's indoor tennis facility.
