YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team had an outstanding showing at the opening meet of the 2014-15 campaign, hosting the EMU Holiday Meet at Bowen Field House, Dec. 5. The meet was a nonscored event, but the Eagles turned in numerous promising marks for the start of the season.
Highlighting the meet was a spectacular performance in the 5000m run. To lead the way, Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) broke her own EMU record, clocking in at 16:28.60 and shaving nearly four seconds off her mark from just under a year ago. In addition to the top time in EMU laurels, an Eagle newcomer notched the second-fastest time in the record books as Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) claimed runner-up in 16:35.66. The pair finished well ahead of the rest of the field, with the third place finisher crossing the line 30 seconds after McDermitt.
The Green and White continued to impress in the distance events, with Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) claiming the top spot in the 3000m run. The Belgian native had a 14-second margin of victory over unattached athlete Courtney Munley with a mark of 9:35.29. Gallein's time will also become a part of the EMU record books, as it is the fifth-best 3000m mark in program history.
In the remaining mid-distance/distance events, the Eagles recorded a pair of runner-up finishes. Running in the first 800m of her EMU career, Agata Klimovich (Minsk, Belarus-Minsk School of Olympic Reserve) turned in a time of 2:15.99 to take second, while freshman Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio-Circleville) took fifth in 2:20.27. Senior Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) had the top finish for EMU in the mile run, clocking in at 5:05.40.
Another individual victory came to the Eagles on the track, with Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich.-Waverly) recording a win in the 400m during her collegiate debut. Roberts paced the field in 57.49 seconds, while teammate Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif.-Adrian Wilcox) delivered a second-place finish in 58.21 seconds.
In the 60m dash, Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams) finished second in 7.61 seconds, while Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P Meyer Lyceum) recorded a career best for third place in 7.62 seconds. The 60m hurdles also saw a pair of strong early season marks from Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North) and Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont). Byrd claimed the top spot for Eastern, taking third in 9.04 seconds, and Uy recorded a personal-best mark of 9.10 seconds. The Holiday Meet turned out to be a career day for Uy, as she went on to win the pole vault after clearing the four-meter mark for the first time in her career, soaring 4.04m/13 feet 3.00-inches over the bar for the victory while Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) finished third with a jump of 3.80 meters/12 feet 5.50-inches. Additionally, Uy's vault stands as the fifth-highest clearance in EMU history.
One more individual victory was awarded to a member of the Eastern squad, as Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) matched her personal record in the high jump to win the event. The French product cleared 1.70 meters/5 feet 7.00-inches, and also was the top finisher for the team in the shot put with a throw of 12.71 meters/41 feet 8.50-inches for fourth. Also competing in the shot put was Darcie Marion (Adrian, Mich.-Madison), who finished seventh with a throw of 11.91 meters/39 feet 1-inch. Marion also took seventh in the weight throw with a 14.81-meter/48-foot 7.25-inch launch, while Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) led the way for the team with a throw of 15.62 meters/51 feet 3.00-inches, less than three inches off her personal record, for fifth place.
Wrapping up individual events, Janina Pollatz (Grandview, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian) had the top finish for the team in the long jump at 5.10 meters/16 feet 9.75-inches for third, and Byrd completed her double-event slate in sixth with a leap of 4.87 meters/15 feet 11.75-inches.
The Eagles picked up two more victories with a pair of winning relay finishes. First, the 4x200m relay, which was contested among throwers and field eventers, resulted in a winning finish over Toledo in 1:49.54 thanks to Byrd, Pollatz, Braidic, and Threatt. To cap the meet off, the lineup of Branham, Chauchard, Clark, and Maya Carter (Racine, Wis.-Case) clocked a 4:00.21 in the 4x400m relay for the top time among the field.
More than a month will pass before the Eagles return to competition. Eastern will return to Bowen Field House once more to host the EMU Triangular Friday Jan. 9, 2015.
