YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team produced a strong first day of the EMU Invitational, leading the six-team field with 305 points. Oakland trails closely behind Eastern with 290 points, followed by Bowling Green (265), Ball State (208), Wayne State (108), and Olivet Nazarene (37).
The Eagles won three events over the course of seven contested competitions, and the majority of the Green and White's marks showed steady improvement going into the holiday break. The first victory was earned on the 1-meter springboard, with Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) recording her career-best score of 321.80 points to pace the field. The diving squad dominated the field, with Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy), Melynee Saya (Nashua, N.J.-Nashua), and Karly Taylor (Munster, Ind.-Munster) going 3-4-5 after earning the bulk of the top scores for the morning's diving session.
Another victory came in the 1650 free, in which Audra Burtch (Goshen, Ind.-Concord) had a dominating performance. Burtch was the only swimmer to break the 17-minute barrier, winning in 16:54.83 by nearly a 20-second margin. Compared to her swim from last year's EMU Invitational, Burtch managed to shave off almost 40 seconds from her mark just one season ago. The event saw another strong swim from Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central), who took third in 17:16.37.
The final win for the Eagles came from Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex), who returned to form for the EMU Invitational and produced the team's season-best time in the 200 fly, winning the event by over a second in 2:01.65.
Many more Eagles swam their fastest times of the season, including Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) and Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) in the 100 free. The pair finished fourth and fifth, respectively, after dipping under the 52-second mark for the first time this season. MacLean touched in at 51.77 seconds, while Detro was not far behind in 51.81 seconds.
Wrapping up the individual events, the Eagles were paced by a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 200 back and 200 breast. In the 200 back, Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) recorded a time of 2:04.49, while Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) was the top finisher for the Green and White in the 200 breast, notching a season-best time of 2:19.63.
To end the day, the team grabbed a second-place finish in the 400 free relay after dropping the tight race to Bowling Green by just over a quarter of a second. The lineup of Detro, MacLean, Godlewski, and Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet) was able to produce the fastest time of the season by over four seconds, touching in at 3:25.22.
The EMU Invitational will resume tomorrow, starting with the first swimming session at 10 a.m. in Jones Natatorium. Live results will be available through EMUEagles.com.
