DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
—Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team brought in 2015 with a bang, downing Wayne State University in a 226-73 decision, Jan. 17.  The Eagles won all but two events, and increase their record to 5-1-1 for the 2014-15 season while WSU falls to 3-2.

The Green and White started and ended the meet with a relay victory, claiming both the 200 medley and 400 free relays.  In the 200 medley relay, the lineup of Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa. –Moon Area), Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering), Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte), and Sarah Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet) teamed up to touch in at 1:46.12, more than two seconds faster than WSU's A team.  To cap the meet, Ghaffari and Mitcheltree joined Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) and Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) for a victory in the 400 free relay, clocking a 3:33.78 that was five seconds faster than the lead team for the Warriors.

Just one swimming event was surrendered to Wayne State, as Sarah Dombkowski was barely edged out by Kristina Novichenko in the 1000 free.  Dombkowski touched in at 10:32.12 in the first collegiate meet of her career, just five-hundredths of a second behind Novichenko.  The freshman went on to win the 500 free in 5:08.33, leading a sweep of the event with Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) and Allison Murslack (Gibsonia, Pa.-Pine-Richland), who finished in 5:09.74 and 5:16.81, respectively.  Dombkowski also finished runner-up in the 200 free, touching in at 1:57.34 behind teammate Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central)'s winning finish of 1:54.20.  Van Allen picked up another victory on the afternoon, swimming a career-best 53.02 in the 100 free, winning by a margin of nearly two seconds.  Another victory came in the 50 free, with Ghaffari and Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) picking up the top two spots in 24.47 and 24.52 seconds.

Jackson continued her strong sophomore campaign in the butterfly, sweeping both the 100 and 200 titles.  The LaPorte, Ind. native first won the 200 fly in 2:04.48 before leading a sweep of the 100 fly in 56.73 seconds.  Jackson won the 100 fly by nearly four seconds, and was followed by Rosalie Yockey (DeWitt, Mich.-DeWitt) in 1:00.65 and Detro in 1:00.75.

Another Eagle swept her events in the backstroke races, as Mitcheltree touched in first in both the 100 and 200 back.  In the 100 back, clocked in at 58.62 for the win and followed it up with a 2:06.72 mark in the 200 back while Godlewski swept in for second in 2:08.05.

Victories were split in the breaststroke races, with Dorszewski garnering the win in the 100 breast in 1:04.63 and Worthley finishing first in the 200 breast in 2:25.05.  Both races were a sweep for the Eagles, as Worthley took second in the 100 breast in 1:06.43 and was followed by Brooke Rowe in 1:06.45, while Rowe claimed runner-up in the 200 breast in 2:25.54 and Emily Wimmer (Hammond, Ind.-Munster) completed the sweep in 2:28.99.

Finishing up action in between the lane lines, Makenzie Garringer (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) grabbed the win in the 200 IM in 2:12.32, claiming victory by a margin of over two seconds.

In the diving events, the Eagles came away with one victory.  Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy) edged out Karly Taylor (Munster, Ind.-Munster) by 1.13 points, amassing 276.15 points for the win.  Taylor also finished runner-up in the 3-meter dive, posting 282.91 points while Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) and Emily Tubbs (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) both posted career bests for third and fourth place.

Eastern will return to Jones Natatorium for the final home dual of the 2014-15 season, hosting the University at Buffalo Saturday, Jan. 24.  The meet, which is slated to start at 1 p.m., will also be Senior Day for the Eagles.
