YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team scored two goals in the final nine minutes of regulation to force extra time, but a goal with 3:21 remaining in double overtime lifted Western Michigan University over the Eagles, 3-2, in a Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal match at Scicluna Field, Nov. 2. The setback ends EMU's season at 11-7-1, including 7-4-0 in conference play, as the Eagles won back-to-back MAC West Division titles. The Broncos (12-7-1, 5-5-1 MAC) advance to the MAC Tournament semifinals to face Northern Illinois University on Friday, Nov. 7.
Senior Molli Krick scored the second goal of her career with 8:36 to go, and sophomore Madison Hirsch added her first goal of the season at a perfect time with just 1:24 on the second half clock, sending the game into overtime after 90 minutes. Krick took advantage of a hand ball to record her score on a free kick, while Hirsch converted a back-post finish after a perfect cross from Angela Vultaggio. In goal, Megan McCabe (10-6-1) made five saves in 107 minutes of play.
Western Michigan scored two of its three goals off set pieces as Lindsey Lee provided the assists on headers from Liz Abro and Emma Kahn. Abro scored the game's first goal, while Kahn tallied the game-winner with just 3:21 left before the possibility of penalty kicks. Midfielder Nicole Hatcliffe also found a goal for the Broncos. Stephanie Heber (9-3-1) stopped three of the Eagles' five shots on target to earn the win for her team between the posts. WMU out-shot the Green and White, 14-10, throughout the entire contest, while Eastern held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-1.
The Broncos controlled the majority of the first half with the Eagles having a few chances late in the period. Western Michigan fired shots in McCabe's direction before finding the back of the net on a free kick in the 28th minute. Following an EMU foul in the attacking third of the right side of the field, Lindsey Lee placed a ball in the box up for grabs. The kick connected with the head of Abro, placing the ball into the top portion of the goal past a leaping McCabe. With 17:12 remaining in the opening half, the visitors found themselves with the first tally of the contest, 1-0.
As the first half came to a close, Eastern had three consecutive corner kicks to try and even the match at one goal apiece. However, the WMU defense prevented the equalizer as the Broncos took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Western took seven shots in the first 45 minutes, while EMU attempted three and had a total of five corner kicks.
WMU caught the Eagles off guard coming out for the second half. Sneaking behind the EMU defense, Hatcliffe beat McCabe in a one-on-one opportunity to double the margin, 2-0, just 26 seconds into the final half of regulation. The added goal put more pressure on the Eastern attack to score quickly in a quest for a comeback. However, 35 minutes went by, and the Eagles still remained down by a pair of goals.
Eastern caught a break with less than 10 minutes remaining as a WMU handball at the top of the box gave the Green and White a free kick. Stepping up in the clutch, Krick came through for her team by bending the ball into the left side of the goal to cut the Western advantage in half, 2-1 with only 8:36 on the clock. The score shifted the momentum to give the Eagles hope of the possible comeback, and the team held on to it, continuing to put constant pressure on the Broncos' defense.
With time running out, EMU continued to fight before finally breaking through at the 88:36 mark of the match. Bringing the ball down the right side, Vultaggio fired a cross into the box past all of the Western defenders. Finishing the run on the back post, Hirsch extended her leg to the ball as it sailed into the back of the net for the equalizer. The EMU bench as well as the Eastern faithful roared with approval as the Eagles found themselves tied, 2-2, with only 1:24 left in regulation.
In the first overtime, the Eagles took the lone shot, but it was stopped by Heber to send the contest into the double overtime. With less than four minutes in the period, a foul on the right side of the pitch set up a free kick for the Broncos. Similar to WMU's first goal of the game, Lee floated a ball into the box, where Kahn got her head on it to score the deciding goal and keep her team's season alive.
The double overtime defeat brought an end to the careers of eight Eagles who helped lead the squad to two MAC West Division titles as well as the 2013 MAC regular season championship. Wearing a Green and White uniform for the final time were: Krick, Emily Dzik, Marisa Kozikowski, Jenna O'Dell, Chelsie Oddan, Bianca Rossi, Martha Stevens and Angela Vultaggio. The senior class recorded an impressive 37 victories as part of the EMU soccer program.
