Men's cross country will compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 14
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Following a regular season fit for the record books, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team will take up the challenge of competing for an appearance at the NCAA Championship when it goes up against the competitors of the Great Lakes Region, Nov. 14.
The Eagles recently won their fifth consecutive Mid-American Conference title, tying the EMU record for the most consecutive wins as well as the MAC record for fewest points scored in a nine-team field with 23, Nov. 1. In order to achieve such a feat, the Green and White placed all five scoring runners in the top-eight with just a 20-second finish margin. The 2014 individual MAC champion, Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee), is expected to lead the team in the regional meet, but the Green and White has shown a lot of strength when getting out early in races to establish an aggressive lead pack. The tactic worked well for the Eagles as Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) finished runner-up just five seconds behind Fink, with Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge (Alderson Broaddus)) in fifth three seconds behind Bouchikhi. The Eagles also saw a return to form from Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason) and Warren Witchell (Williamston, Mich.-Dansville), who had recovered from season-long injuries to finish seventh and eighth, respectively.
According to the latest US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, the Eagles have kept their position as the fifth-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region, and the four schools preceding the Green and White are all nationally-ranked programs. Host school No. 6 Wisconsin is heavily favored to take back the title after dropping last year's meet to No. 12 Michigan. The Badgers had a strong meet at the Big Ten Championship, winning by a margin of 30 with 47 points over the Wolverines. Wisconsin also boasts two-time Big Ten champion Malachy Schrobilgen. Also ahead of the Eagles in the region are No. 20 Indiana and No. 27 Michigan State.
The men's 10,000-meter race is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. Live results will be provided through uwbadgers.com.
