Eagles held scoreless by MAC East Division leader Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – Playing in a constant downpour for the second-straight game, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team fell 2-0 to the University at Buffalo Sunday afternoon, Oct. 5, at UB Stadium. Against one of the best defensive teams in the Mid-American Conference, the Eagles (6-4-1, 2-2-0 MAC) were held scoreless for just the second time this season.
Buffalo (8-2-1, 4-0-0 MAC) scored once in each half as Julia Benati and Katie Roberts recorded goals for the Bulls. UB goalkeeper Laura Dougall (8-1-1) made five saves to record her seventh shutout of the season.
The Green and White tallied eight shots throughout the match as seven Eagles attempted to score. Junior keeper Megan McCabe (6-3-1) was active throughout the match, stopping seven Buffalo shots on goal as a total of 18 shots were sent her direction.
Comfortable in their own stadium, the Bulls controlled ball possession for the majority of the first half, scoring the first goal of the game in the 14th minute. Moving the ball in the UB offensive third, Celina Carrero passed to Benati. In a surprise move, she blasted the ball from 30 yards out towards the goal and it found the upper left corner of the net past a lunging McCabe. The long strike seemed to have shocked everyone on the field as Buffalo took the lead, holding a 1-0 advantage going into halftime.
Buffalo out-shot EMU 8-2 in the first 45 minutes. The Eagles had chances to score on two corner kicks, but their only two shots came from over 20 yards away. Dougall stopped both EMU shots, while McCabe countered with two saves of her own in the first half.
In the second half, the Bulls added another goal as Roberts snuck a shot inside the right side of the goal to give Buffalo a two-goal advantage with 35 minutes left to play. Martha Stevens nearly cut the deficit in half, but Dougall got her hand on the shot to deflect it just right of the net. Rachel Washburn proceeded to take three-consecutive corner kicks to try and set up an Eastern score, but Buffalo played tight defense to deny any opportunities.
Following a stretch of playing eight of the last nine games away from home, the Eagles return to Ypsilanti to begin a four-game homestand. During the first weekend of back-to-back weekends at Scicluna Field, Eastern host MAC West rivals Toledo and Central Michigan. The Eagles and Rockets will square off Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m., while the two in-state foes do battle in a Sunday afternoon matchup, Oct. 12, with a first touch set for 1 p.m.
