YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team extended its winning streak to four, defeating the Central Michigan University Chippewas in a thrilling five-set encounter, 3-2 (25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 27-29, 15-13) Thursday, Oct. 30, inside the Convocation Center.  The Eagles improved to 15-10 (6-5 MAC), while the Chippewas slipped to 9-14 (4-7 MAC).

Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) paced the Eagles with a triple-double (46 assists, 13 digs, 10 kills).  Natalie Folk (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) were co-leaders with 18 digs.  Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) repelled the Chippewas' attack with six of the Eagles' 20 block-assists.  Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community), Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City), and Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) were three of five Eagles with ten-or-more kills.  EMU's attacking percentage was .191 (63-27-188), eclipsing CMU's pace of .189 (64-28-190).

Several errors plagued the Green and White early, who fell behind, 10-6.  The Eagles clawed their way back, scoring seven of the next nine points to take a 13-12 lead.  However, CMU scored four consecutive points to take a 16-13 lead, forcing the Eagles to call a timeout.  The timeout proved to have an immediate impact, with the Eagles scoring five of the next six points to take an 18-17 lead.  The Chippewas  would not go away quietly, at one stage scoring three out of four points go ahead, 22-21.
After the Eagles fought back to score two of the next three points to level at 23-23, the Chippewas used a timeout.  The timeout proved to be in vain, with the Eagles scoring the next two points to win an captivating opening set, 25-23.

The Eagles were determined to take a two-set lead, jumping out to an early 7-3 advantage and forcing an early timeout from the Chippewas.  The significance of the set was not lost on CMU, who took another timeout with the Eagles leading, 12-7. The timeout failed to ignite the Chippewas, with the Eagles at one stage scoring seven-of-eight points to take commanding 22-12 edge. The Eagles took the second set in convincing fashion, 25-16.  EMU's attacking percentage of .308 (15-3-39) was their highest of any set.

Neither team could build a substantial lead early in the third set.  The Chippewas were the first to find a breakthrough, scoring four consecutive points to take an 11-8 lead.  EMU responded with three consecutive points to level the score at 11. CMU responded in kind to take a 14-11 lead, but the Eagles quickly bounced back to tie the score at 14. With the score 18-18, the Chippewas scored five of the next eight points to take 23-21. CMU took the next two points to win the frame 25-21, forcing a fourth set.

The Eagles quickly fell behind in the fourth set, 10-6.  An Eagles' timeout had a positive impact in the short-term, with the Eagles scoring five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to 12-11.  However, the Chippewas took seven of the next 11 points to take an 18-14 lead.  Determined not to force a fifth set, EMU called timeout trailing 22-18.  Again, the timeout had an immediate impact, with the Eagles scoring the next three points to cut the deficit to, 22-21, forcing the Chippewas to call a timeout of their own.  With the Eagles leading, 25-24, and serving for match point, CMU called its final timeout of the set.  The Chippewas held on, fighting off three match points to take the fourth set, 29-27, forcing a winner-take-all fifth set.

Having seen a two-set lead evaporate, the Eagles were not about to let the match slip away, taking a 7-2 lead early.  However, the Chippewas rattled off three consecutive points to cut the deficit to 7-5, forcing an Eagle timeout.  The Chippewas then scored three more points to take an 8-7 lead, at which point the teams switched sides on the court.

The Eagles started the second half brightly, scoring the opening two points to take a 9-8 lead.  From there, the two teams matched each other point for point.  Again, with the Eagles leading, 14-13, and serving for the match. However, lightning did not strike twice, as a Chippewa set-error gifted the Eagles a 15-13 victory, completing an entertaining five-set performance.

Eastern will have a quick road stint Saturday, Nov.  1, to face an Ohio University squad which is unbeaten in conference play.  The match will take place at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.
