EMU responded with three consecutive points to level the score at 11. CMU responded in kind to take a 14-11 lead, but the Eagles quickly bounced back to tie the score at 14. With the Eagles leading, 25-24, and serving for match point, CMU called its final timeout of the set. The Chippewas held on, fighting off three match points to take the fourth set, 29-27, forcing a winner-take-all fifth set.
Having seen a two-set lead evaporate, the Eagles were not about to let the match slip away, taking a 7-2 lead early. However, the Chippewas rattled off three consecutive points to cut the deficit to 7-5, forcing an Eagle timeout. The Chippewas then scored three more points to take an 8-7 lead, at which point the teams switched sides on the court.
The Eagles started the second half brightly, scoring the opening two points to take a 9-8 lead. From there, the two teams matched each other point for point. Again, with the Eagles leading, 14-13, and serving for the match. However, lightning did not strike twice, as a Chippewa set-error gifted the Eagles a 15-13 victory, completing an entertaining five-set performance.
