Kent State Grounds Eagles in 2-1 Setback

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team (8-5-1, 4-3-0 MAC) suffered a 2-1 overtime setback to the Golden Flashes of Kent State University (8-4-3, 3-2-2 MAC) in a cross-divisional Mid-American Conference match at Scicluna Field Friday, Oct. 17.
Senior Angela Vultaggio led the EMU offense as she notched her seventh goal of the season, while Bianca Rossi added one assist and one shot on goal. Sophomore Ellie Tillar had two shots on net for the Green and White, while Molli Krick put one shot on goal. On the defensive side of the ball, Megan McCabe made five saves.
The Golden Flashes were led by Kristen Brots and Jaime Eiben who each netted a goal apiece, while Stephanie Haugh and Madison Helterbran had an assist. Haugh put two shots on net for KSU and five other Kent State players found the net one time. Goalkeeper Stephanie Senn made six stops for the Golden Flashes in the contest.
The Eagles and KSU had an even 14 shots in 96:31 minutes of play with Kent State outshooting the Green and White 4-1 in overtime.
Kent State came out strong against the Eagles, going up 3-0 in shots on goal before Kristen Brots shot a ball just out the reach of goalkeeper Megan McCabe into the top of the net to put the Golden Flashes up 1-0 over EMU.
The Green and White answered back just six minutes later when Vultaggio found herself wide open in front of the net and fired the ball into the left corner to knot the score at 1-1.
Eastern Michigan put three final shots on goal to end the half as Vultaggio, Krick, and Megan Trapp all fired off, while Kent State's Haugh tallied two for the Golden Flashes.
The Eagles set the tempo for the second half but were unable to find the back of the net sending the contest into overtime. EMU outshot the Golden Flashes 8-2 in the second 45 minutes of action putting four on net, while KSU was unable to get a shot on goal.
EMU had a look early at the start of overtime but were unable to capitalize as Kent State's Jamie Eiben sailed a shot into the top left corner of the net past the outstretched hand of McCabe to end the sudden death overtime and give the Golden Flashes the 2-1 victory over the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 19 when they take on Ohio University in a Senior Day match up at Scicluna Field. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
