Eagle grapplers look to snap four match losing streak
EMU vs. Kent State Notes
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team looks to snap a four match losing skid when it takes on Kent State in its fourth Mid-American Conference dual, Friday, Jan. 31. First bout is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. inside Bowen Field House.
THE GOLDEN FLASHES AT A GLANCE: Kent State comes into the Friday night contest with an 8-8 overall record and a 2-2 conference record. Most recently, the Golden Flashes have dropped duals to Mid-American Conference opponents Ohio (21-16) and Central Michigan (21-12). KSU's last win came when the Golden Flashes hosted N.C. State, defeating the Wolfpack, 23-14, Jan. 19.
Kent State has five wrestlers ranked in the top-20 between the AWN ranking and the WIN ranking as well as six wrestlers ranked in the top four of the MAC January polls. Sophomore Mack McGuire paves the way at 133 lbs. as he makes an appearance on all three lists. The sophomore boasts a 21-7 overall record on the season and is 3-1 in conference duals, while both Ian Miller (157 lbs.) and Sam Wheeler (184 lbs.) are the final two Golden Flashes to rank on all three lists. Miller currently holds the top spot in the conference at 157 lbs. as he is 20-4 on the season and 3-1 in league bouts. The sophomore ranks eighth in the nation in falls as he has notched nine pins on the season for KSU. Wheeler ranks as high as No. 10 in WIN rankings and is No. 2 in the MAC in the 184 lb. weight class. The sophomore is currently 25-4 on the season and is undefeated in conference competition (4-0). Sophomore Nick DePalma is one win shy of reaching the 20 win mark this season as he holds a 19-11 record and is 3-0 in conference bouts. DePalma ranks third at 149 lbs. in the conference, while Tyler Small (141 lbs.) and Cole Baxter (197 lbs.) are ranked fourth in their respective weight classes.
SERIES HISTORY VS. KENT STATE: Over the past eight seasons, the Eagles have struggled with the Golden Flashes as KSU holds an unblemished 8-0 record against the Green and White. The closest EMU has come to taking down Kent State was in the 2008-09 season when Eastern fell 21-13 to the Golden Flashes, Feb. 15, 2009 in Kent, Ohio.
Last year, Eastern got off to a hot start against KSU as Filiberto Colon (133 lbs.) and Aaron Sulzer (157 lbs.) both earned pins over their opponents on their senior night. The Eagles held the lead over Kent State until the final three bouts, as the Green and White was only able to secure one other win on the day from Seth Schaner at 141 lbs.
Eastern returns four grapplers to the mats from last season's dual against Kent State, while KSU returns three wrestlers.
AWN / INTERMAT RANKINGS: Redshirt-senior Jared Germaine received rankings in the AWN poll and the Intermat.com poll for the third week in a row as he now ranks No. 19 on AWN and No. 20 on Intermat.com at 125 lbs. The Saginaw, Mich. native boasts a 10-1 overall record and a 2-1 MAC record with his only loss came against Northern Illinois' Nick Harrison.
DELPORTO TIES ALL-TIME EMU COACHING RECORD: Head Coach Derek DelPorto currently holds an 80-73-2 record at EMU, which is one win shy of breaking former head coach John Eisley's EMU coaching record. While at Eastern, Eisley posted an 80-74-4 record in his 12-year tenure. If DelPorto picks up just one more wins this season, he will take the all-time wins record in just eight seasons at the helm.
DelPorto clinched the tying win at the Pitt Duals, Jan. 12, when the team defeated Duke, 26-10, in its first-of-three duals on the afternoon.
EAGLES RANK FOUR IN MID-JANUARY MAC POLL: The redshirt-senior trio of Jared Germaine (125 lbs.), Phillip Joseph (184 lbs.) and Nick Whitenburg (197 lbs.) remain ranked for the third-straight time in the Mid-American Conference monthly poll, while redshirt-sophomore Vincent Pizzuto (133 lbs.) makes his first appearance in the rankings.
Germaine has had a stellar senior campaign as he boasts a 10-1 record on the mat. The Saginaw, Mich. native went 9-0 before seeing his first loss of the season against Northern Illinois, but was able to overcome the defeat and grab his 10th victory over then-No. 25 Ohio.
Joseph has been a steady competitor at 184 lbs. for the Green and White as he is 15-5 overall and 3-0 in MAC competition. The Lapeer, Mich. native is currently on a two match win streak heading into Friday's bout, while Whitenburg is looking to get back in stride with the Eagles' match against Kent State. He is currently on a two-bout losing streak with his last win coming via major decision against Olivet, Dec. 17.
Pizzuto makes his first appearance in the MAC poll as he is currently riding a three match win streak heading into Friday's bout. The redshirt-sophomore is 13-6 on the season and one of only two EMU grapplers to be 3-0 in MAC competition.
