Pizzuto picks up big win over No. 18 Mack McGuire

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad fell to Kent State, 18-12, in a Mid-American Conference dual, Friday, Jan. 31. The Eagles fall to 8-6 overall on the season and 1-3 in the conference. Meanwhile, KSU improves to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in league competition.
Neither team was able to pick up any extra point matches, as all 10 bouts were decided by decision. Although EMU was unable to earn a victory over the Golden Flashes, it was the closest the team has come in the past eight seasons as it fell by only six points to the MAC foe.
The Green and White got the start it needed to kick off the dual as redshirt-senior Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) earned a 9-7 decision over Alfredo Gray at 125 lbs. Redshirt-sophomore Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) picked up a huge victory over No. 18 Mack McGuire at 133 lbs. Pizzuto clinched a takedown with time dwindling to go up by two and erase McGuire's riding time point, extending the Eagle lead to 6-0.
The Golden Flashes answered back to the Eagles first threats as Tyler Small (141 lbs.) and Mike DePalma (149 lbs.) each notched decisions to knot the score at 6-6 heading into the halfway point of the dual.
Eastern and Kent State exchanged bouts as Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia) grabbed a win a 157 lbs. before Tyler Buckwater knotted the score for the second time in the dual with a 5-2 decision at 165 lbs.
Kent State saw its first lead of the dual when Caleb Marsh secured a 5-3 decision at 174 lbs., taking the 12-9 advantage. Sam Wheeler, who is No. 12 according to InterMat.com and is ranked No. 2 in the conference at 184 lbs., handed redshirt-senior Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) his first MAC loss as he grabbed an 11-7 decision, extending the KSU lead to 15-9 with just two bouts remaining.
The Golden Flashes grabbed the victory they needed at 197 lbs. to secure the win over EMU as Cole Baxter earned a 5-2 decision, putting a win out of reach for Eastern heading into the final match of the night.
Redshirt-senior Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) picked up one final win for the Eagles as he kept Mimmo Lytle scoreless with a 5-0 decision in the heavyweight division.
"I thought our fight tonight was at a very high level." said Head Coach Derek DelPorto, "Our pace and our conditioning was better than theirs, but they capitalized o our mistakes and scored, so hats off to them. Once we correct some of the minor mistakes made I feel confident some of those matches will go our way at the conference tournament."
The Eagles hit the road to take on Cleveland State, Wednesday, Feb. 5 for a non-conference tilt before returning to conference action, Saturday Feb. 8 against Missouri.

Bout-By-Bout
125: Germaine dec. Gray, 9-7
Gray notched the first points on the bout as he earned a takedown, before Germaine grasped an escape a few seconds later. Gray grabbed his second takedown of the first period before Germaine clinched a reversal and knocked off some of Gray's riding time to close out the period just one point behind. After starting down in the second period, Germaine found his stride as he got an escape off the whistle before Gray secured his third takedown of the bout. Germaine added his second escape of the period and his first takedown to put himself up 7-6 heading into the final two minutes of action. With only 13 seconds remaining in the bout, Germaine secured the final points he would need to give the Eagles the 3-0 lead.
133: Pizzuto dec. McGuire, 7-6
The first period went back and forth between Pizzuto and McGuire. Each time McGuire grabbed a takedown, Pizzuto answered right back with an escape just seconds later. Pizzuto knotted the period at 4-4 with a takedown with just 12 second remaining and chose to start down in the second. A last second escape from Pizzuto was the only point of the second period as the North Jackson, Ohio native held the narrow 5-4 lead heading into the final two minutes. McGuire knotted the score with just a minute left with an escape as he had accumulated 1:52 of riding time. Pizzuto was able to erase the riding time point as he notched a huge takedown on the edge of the circle to take the 7-6 decision and put the Green and White up 6-0 over the Golden Flashes.
141: Small dec. Barber, 7-3
Small scored the only points of the first period as he grabbed a late takedown over Barber heading into the second period with a 2-0 lead. Small took the 3-0 advantage with an escape in the third but Barber came within one with a takedown in the second. Small went up 5-2 over Barber to close out the second as he got a last second reversal. Small extended his lead to 7-2 with a takedown in the final two minutes. Barber started to work his way back as he grabbed an escape with 35 second remaining but was unable to earn any further points, falling in a 7-3 decision.
149: DePalma dec. Shaw, 5-0
DiPalma earned the first points of the bout as he grabbed a takedown over Shaw with over a minute left in the first to end the scoring in the first three minutes. DiPalma added two points in the second with a near fall with less than a minute remaining as Shaw was unable to get on top and earn any points throughout the entire bout as DePalma picked up a riding time point in the third as he secured a 5-0 victory to knot the score at 6-6 heading into the fifth match of the dual.
157: Zeerip dec. Keklak, 9-3
Zeerip got out to a quick start over Keklak as he notched two takedowns to take the 4-0 lead before Keklak earned his first point by way of escape. Zeerip extended his lead to 5-1 in the second with an escape after starting down to start the period. Keklak came within three of Zeerip in the third period as he earned an escape but Zeerip answered back with a takedown with less than 20 seconds left in the bout. Zeerip added one final takedown with two seconds remaining to take the 9-3 victory and give Eastern its second lead of the night.
165: Buckwater dec. Vettese, 5-2
Vettese clinched the first points with a takedown after seeing no action through the first two minutes of the first period. Buckwater came up with his first point as time dwindled with an escape late in the first period but Vettese held him from scoring any other further points as he ended the period on top. Buckwater knotted the score at 2-2 in the second as he notched an escape to start the period and took his first lead with a takedown just seconds later. Buckwater secured 1:40 of riding time to gain one final point and take the 5-2 decision to once again knot the dual.
174: Davis / Marsh
For the first time in two matches Kent State would come up with the first points of the bout as Marsh grabbed a takedown on the edge of the circle, while Davis was unable to score in the first three minutes of action. Marsh extended his lead to 4-0 as he scored the only points of the second period with a reversal. Davis started to attack offensively in the final minutes of the third with an escape and a takedown to come within one but could not secure a final takedown to take the win as Marsh had accumulated 2:49 of riding time to earn the 5-3 decision.
184: Wheeler dec. Joseph, 11-7
Wheeler notched a takedown in the first to take the lead over Joseph before the Lapeer, Mich. native earned an escape to come within one. Wheeler added two final points with a takedown near the edge of the mat to take the 4-1 advantage heading into the second period. Joseph found an escape in the second and started to make offensive threats as he attacked Wheeler at the legs in the second period, but Wheeler added yet another takedown to extend his lead to 6-2. Joseph added his third takedown, but Wheeler against answered back with a final takedown to close out the second with an 8-3 lead. Wheeler used two escapes in the third and Joseph clinched his first takedown of the match. Joseph started to work his way back in with a takedown, but Wheeler gained a second escape to stay just four points ahead and take the 11-7 victory.
197: Baxter dec. Whitenburg, 5-2
The Golden Flashes took the first point of the bout as Baxter grabbed an early takedown over Whitenburg for the only points of the first period. Whitenburg received a warning in the second but was able to work his way out before getting called for stalling. Baxter extended his lead to 4-0 with a reversal in the second, as Whitenburg was unable to find any points. Trailing 4-0 to start the third, Whitenburg grabbed one takedown, but it was not enough as Baxter accumulated over four minutes of riding time to secure a 5-2 victory for Kent State.
HWT: Hoballah dec. Lytle, 5-0
After a scoreless first period, Hoballah earned the first points of the bout with a takedown on the edge of the mat. Hoballah extended his lead to 5-0 with a near fall as Lytle tried to force his way out of bounds to escape the pin to end the second period.
