Cleveland State Notes

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University grapplers are set to travel to Cleveland State University, Wednesday, Feb. 5 for the second time this season for its first-of-four duals on the week. First bout of the match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Woodling Gym.

SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE: Cleveland State is looking to snap a six-dual losing streak as the Vikings have not been able to secure a win since Nov. 26, 2013. CSU's lone victory came over John Carroll when the Vikings took down the Blue Streaks in a decisive 32-6 victory. Cleveland State is 1-8 on the season as the squad most recently dropped matches to both Bloomsburg (39-4) and Lock Haven (30-8) on back-to-back days.
The Vikings have struggled through the 2013-14 season as the team averages 10.8 points per dual. CSU has been held to single-digit scoring in four of its 10 duals as it is being outscored 232-98 overall.
Twelve of the Vikings have individually secured double-digit victories this year as seven of the 10 starters have 10 or more wins this year. CSU is led by sophomore Dan King who started the season at 125 lbs. and moved up to 133 lbs. mid-way through. King posts 19 wins on the season, 14 of which have come from extra point bouts. The sophomore has a team-high seven pins and seven major decisions to go along with five decisions. Sophomore Jared McKinley headlines the 141 lb. weight class as he has 16 victories on the year, while heavyweight Riley Shaw has 15 wins on the season and 174 pounder Nick Corba has 10 wins this year.

LUCKY SEVEN?: The Eagles wil be looking to take their seventh-straight victory from the Vikings this Wednesday, while the win will also secure Head Coach Derek DelPorto's 81st EMU victory as head coach and hand him the all-time EMU coaching record.
Over the past eight years, the Eagles have handled the Vikings with ease as the Green and White holds a 6-2 record over CSU. Eastern has taken home the victory in the past six duals between the two squads. EMU has outscored the Vikings 208-102 in the past eight seasons, and 181-55 en route to its six-straight wins over Cleveland State.
The Green and White traveled to Cleveland, Ohio earlier this season for the Cleveland State Open where three Eagle grapplers took on Viking competition. Eastern posted a 1-2 record on the day against CSU as freshman Austin Geerlings pinned Zach Frambach at 165 lbs. Starter Nick Montgomery of Cleveland State secured a victory over Seth Schaner at 141 lbs, while LaTrell Davis earned a decision over freshman Rocco Borg at 149 lbs.
Last season, the Eagles took a 21-15 victory over Cleveland State at Bowen Field House. The win was the smallest margin of victory in the series for the Green and White in the past eight seasons as the Eagles had kept the Vikings to single digit scoring in three of its previous five wins. Eastern used a comeback victory last year as the CSU had led up until the final three bouts of the night. Phillip Joseph and Anthony Abro came up with big wins for the Eagles as Joseph pinned his opponent and Abro held his opponent to just one point the entire match. Jared Germaine and Jacob Dorulla also secured victories for the Eagles in their respective weight classes, while then-seniors Aaron Sulzer and Chris Eggert picked up the final two wins for Eastern. Xavier Dye is the lone returner to the Cleveland State starting lineup that was able to come up with a victory in last seasons dual between the two squads.
Eastern returns five starters to the mats from last year's duals, while CSU returns just two of its 10 starters from a season ago.

EASTERN LOOKS TO GET BACK ON TRACK: After suffering a five-dual losing streak, the Eagles will look to get back to their winning ways as they will compete in  six duals in the next 11 days. After the Green and White takes on CSU, Eastern will head to Missouri for a conference dual against the Tigers, Saturday, Feb. 8 before having two non-conference duals against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Campbellsville, Sunday, Feb. 9 in Edwardsville, Ill.
With little time to rest, Eastern will close out its 2013-14 regular season schedule with two MAC duals as it will take on tough conference opponent Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant, Feb. 13, before returning home for one final dual against Buffalo, Sunday, Feb. 16.
The Eagles have already secured more wins this year than last and, if EMU could win out the remainder of the 2013-14 schedule, it would tie its 14 wins from the 2011-12 season.

EAGLES HAVE BEST SHOWING AGAINST KENT IN EIGHT YEARS: Although EMU was unable to secure a victory over the Golden Flashes, Eastern had its best showing it has seen against Kent State in the past eight seasons. The Eagles led KSU at two different points in the match as Kent State was forced to use a come-from-behind victory to take down the Green and White.
Redshirt-sophomore Vincent Pizzuto secured the biggest win of the night for Eastern as he tallied a 7-6 decision over No. 18 Mack McGuire. Pizzuto used a last second takedown on the edge of the mat to erase McGuire's riding time and give EMU its first substantial lead of the night. Kent State secured its victroy over Eastern after the 197 lb. bout, but that did not stop Khodor Hoballah from shutting out Mimmo Lytle in the final match of the night, taking his 10th victory of his final season.
